How to zoom VST(s)?
« on: July 16, 2019, 09:59:24 am »

Hi,

VST GUIs often appear "tiny", not just in JRiver MC but in many other hosts too: wee tiny buttons, knobs and fader controls.

This has been an idiosyncrasy of VST plugin culture for years.

However, with the recent advent of higher DPI displays, the problem has been intensified: e.g., when I load certain popular VSTs in JRiver on my MS-Surface Pro 4, some practically require a microscope to interact with!

A few VST plugin manufacturers have introduced zoom (e.g., 100%, 125%, 150%, etc.) right into VST GUIs (e.g., ToneBoosters' Morphit). Sadly, however, most have not.

Would it be possible for JRiver to add a simple zoom-multiplier option to VST pages?

That would be a welcome enhancement.

Thank you so much.

This is a tricky one because the pages are just a fixed size.  So even if we make the DSP dialog bigger, the page fills the same size.  We're not doing the actual drawing.

Hmmm. I understand.

It's true that none of the hosts themselves (e.g., Cubase, Bidule) seem to have a "zoom" function for VSTs they load.

If there's a zoom function, it's always built right into the VST itself.

The only way I've seen tiny VSTs become larger on the same screen is by monkeying with Windows 10's scaling/zoom options, but that also affects the host(s) and everything else. That said, if I'm not mistaken, one can now customize scaling-level on a per-application basis in Windows 10.

Perhaps a workaround for what we're talking about here lies therein. I can possibly try some experiments over the next while.

I corresponded with ToneBoosters support (although this could easily apply to any other VST maker). They are including, as standard, a "zoom" or "scaling" % function into their new v.4 generation VSTs (e.g., Morphit). Eventually the whole line will have it.

Stop by at audirvana. They seem to be able to scale vst plugins. So it can be done. They also show up to four at a time, which is handy if you use eq, effects and metering/analysing for example. Having said that MediaCenter still blows them out of the water in most other areas.
