VST3 (again)
« on: October 13, 2019, 01:22:06 pm »

This has come up before (e.g. https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=116566.0) but I thought I'd bump it

I notice that steinberg no longer even make VST2 interface code available so VST2 seems well and truly dead.

Will MC (ever) support VST3 or is this no longer considered relevant/desirable?

What exactly do you expect to change from that?

I don't understand the Q.

I'm asking if VST3 will be supported because, generally speaking, it becomes harder and harder to write new things on top of a dead/unsupported framework

Thats if anything something for us to worry about, but do you have any actual real-world reasons to want it right now?

I was starting to write a VST plugin, remembered that MC only supports VST2 and had to go hunting around for old VST SDK distributions that include some particular VST2 files in order to proceed. Hence I thought I would ask if there were any plans in this direction or whether VST support is considered a bit legacy and/or not so relevant.

Sorry to bring this up again, Like Matt, I am developing a VST plugin, but the issue is that Steinberg no longer provides a way to purchase a VST2 license: https://sdk.steinberg.net/viewtopic.php?t=561
It is not a technical or performance issue, it is a licensing issue.

That means there is no way to be able to write a VST plugin for JRiver due to this licensing restriction. Only VST3 plugins can be developed, which aren't supported by JRiver...

no plan to make JRiver housing VST3 plugins? I am happy to support JRiver every year but I'd really like to see this thing moving

thanks
