Using same library on Windows and Ubuntu
« on: September 13, 2019, 04:46:30 pm »

I have a main music library I initially set up on my Windows 10 partition. The library is on my Windows 10 partition, and my music is on an external drive. I go back and forth between my Ubuntu 18.04 and Windows partitions regularly (via GRUB).

I understand Windows and Linux have different conventions for accessing an external drive (E:\ vs /media/myname/drivename).

Despite this, is it possible for me to use that exact same main library on Ubuntu, and if so, are there any recommended approaches to setting this up properly?

Thanks!

Well, you're in luck, if you're using both 25.0.100 on both Windows and Ubuntu, you might be able to get this working: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,122099.0.html

Thanks. I just tried it.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to have it resolve my files yet. I'd like to use Portable Library if I can, as it seems this is the most convenient route.

Here's what I've tried so far:
  • I added an additional library to JRiver in Ubuntu that points to my Windows partition one. All the files in my library showed up, but all album art is missing and none of the files were able to play.
  • I then went under Portable Library and added the rule E:\|/home/media/samjay/My Drive/, but it didn't resolve the album art or files.
  • I noticed in the not found error the path it was trying to look for gave me backslashes, so I then tried the rule E:\|\home\media\samjay\My Drive\ (using back slashes instead of forward). Same result.
  • I then thought maybe my drive having a space in the name was the cause of the issue, but I wasn't sure how to escape the space when adding the rules.
So I created a symlink to my external drive with sudo ln -s /media/samjay/My Drive/ ~/external-drive, and put in the rule E:\|\home\samjay\external-drive\. Same result.

Would it make more sense for me to use a hardlink to the external drive? Is there a more correct way to declare the rules I tried with Portable Library? Or is there something else that makes sense that I should try? I did see on the forum that others have been running into some issues with 25.0.100, so that could have something to do with as well. On Windows I have 25.0.98, but do I need to have 25.0.100 running?
