OT: The growth of technology

Peter took this picture of two of JRiver's technological devices.



The iPod on top holds 1000 times more than the hard disk below (10GB vs 10MB), It is 1/500th the volume, and costs 1/10th the money (the Corvus was $5000 new). The iPod is a lot lighter, quieter, and does more.

I got the wonderful opportunity to see Sun Microsystems "Executive Briefing Center" last week.  They have some incredible "proof of concepts" on display for how the ubiquitousness of network connected devices provides some awesome functionality.

One of my favorites was the gas pump that's connected to a centralized database....  when you've met certain customer profiles (say the purchase of $50 of gas in a month), your dashboard computer (they had a Jeep) gets offered the choice of free MP3s that are immediatedly downloaded to your auto.  I asked if the prototype would work with MC, but got a bit of a blank stare!

The moral of the ECB brief:  10 years ago there were lots of things we wanted to do with computers/networks, but the technology wasn't there to support the idea.  Today, we have technology just waiting for an applicaiton.

I want MC to run on my cellphone!

30 to 40 years ago, main frame "hard disks" consisted of a stack of flexible disks (kind of like a Bernoulli drive today) that were 2 to 3 feet in diameter. Capacity was in the very low megabyte range (maybe sub-MB) per disk. There was (maybe still is) a spray on substance that could bring out the magnetic patterns on the disk. My dad had one but lost it or it was destroyed. Would've made a very cool table with clear resin poured over the top of it.

Good idea! Maybe I can loose that beerbelly my wife keeps pestering me about in that way! Will JRiver sell that thing?  ;D
