Consistent JRiver Options
« on: February 20, 2020, 03:05:50 pm »

We use JRiver at our radio station.  Each DJ who uses JRiver starts it up as the "broadcaster" user.  Unfortunately, DJs inadvertently make changes to the settings, or leave Repeat mode set to "Stop After Each Item", or the wrong zone selected, or...

The following DJ has to manually visit each setting to be sure it is back to the default settings.  What is the preferred method for avoiding this pitfall - allowing JRiver to come up in a consistent and well-defined state each time it is started?

One method I can think of would be to set all the options to the ideal state as an admin, and then make the "settings" file(s) read-only to the "broadcast" user.  But I don't know what or where that all-important, settings file or files reside.

Also, same question for the Mac version.

I believe party mode prevents settings being changed. Another way is to set up everything as ideal and back up the library. Then each DJ could restore the library, but only the settings, from this file when they start. That would quickly make sure all the settings are in the "ideal" form, regardless of what the previous person changed. However, some features may not reside in the library settings, so do some testing.

Could you make each DJ a zone? Many settings belong to a zone, a DJ could then have his own settings which would persist.

Alas, we have too many DJs to dedicate a zone to each.  The solution we're going to go with (eventually - we have yet to do this) was proposed by fitbrit above:  to bring the system to the perfect state - settings-wise - and save it as a library backup.  Then, if/when a DJ is having a problem with getting MC to play properly, we'll instruct them to load that backup with only the settings checkbox selected.  That's the plan anyway.  We'll see how it goes in practice.
