Duplicate file handling with Nomad Jukeboxes
« on: April 21, 2003, 09:16:03 am »

For some silly reason, Nomad jukeboxes won't allow two tracks with the same name. No--not two tracks with the same _FILE_name, but no two tracks with the same title. If you try to download two tracks with the same title using PlayCenter, PlayCenter asks whether you want to Skip, Replace, or Rename (just like MC). But PlayCenter has an option to Rename All, and MC doesn't seem to support this. If you Rename All with PlayCenter, then it automatically puts a "(1)", "(2)", etc... after the title of the track.

On a related note: can anybody explain to me why I can't have two tracks with the same title in a Jukebox? Why can't the files be named differently in the filesystem, but the name of the track be the same?  Maybe somebody who understands the Nomad filesystem more than I do can answer...

Joshua,

Why Creative decided to not allow files with the same title is anybody's guess.

I did not include "Rename All" in the Plug-in because I thought it would be better to provide a suggested name ( the way the plugin now works) rather than just automatically renaming the files and having users be confused as to why the files have been renamed.  If this is a big drawback for you, I can include it.

If you accept that Nomad cannot have duplicate Titles, having the titles renamed "Title" and "Title(1)" still seems confusing when you are trying to navigate to  the correct song on Nomad. I think users are better off naming the file something unique during the transfer.

Peronsally, I tihnk MJ's philosophy of, "give the user the choice" is best! I'm not saying get rid of the way it works now; I'm just saying I'd like the option of letting MJ/MC rename automatically for me.

And incidentally: major major kudos to everybody at J River for two things--1) a great product, and 2) great responsiveness to their customers. I feel that J River embodies the "company-to-customer relationship of the Internet Age" and hope that more companies start providing the kind of interaction that you guys do.

Joshua,

I just posted a new plugin (v 9.0.09) which includes the auto rename feature as an option.

FYI, I discovered that Nomad Jukeboxes use a combination of Track Name, Album, and Artist as the uniqueness criteria. If all three of these are the same, the Nomad considers the file unique.

Just in case anybody was wondering.
