No TV picture - moved
« on: April 15, 2003, 02:58:12 pm »

>> - displaying TV is broken (used to work the last time I checked ~.135); Sound is ok,
>> tuner seems to work, but picture is black on black ; Hauppauge WinTV Stereo, PAL,
>> Germany, btwincap drivers

>Try deleting this registry key
>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Jukebox\TV Settings and start over.

did that, no change, still everything black. tuner works. sound works

> If that does not help, try TV Options->Configure TV... and go to "Advanced Properties" page.
> Double click "Video Capture Filter..." and make sure the right Video Standard is selected.

PAL-G should be ok for Germany?

> Also check Display page and make sure the controls in the lower portion ("Video")
> have appropriate settings.

settings:
4:3
crop edges
color enable
default and auto enabled.

when I hit ok after all that I get 'Information - Failed to play TV. (unknown error) - OK' and sound stops. Doublecliicking on a tv channel (in the tv node window) hangs MC. Can't even move it around. Killing it using XP's task manager and starting it again brings back sound and a nice black box ;-(

According to Microsoft documentation, Germany TV standard should be PAL-B. It probably is a typo on your part, since PAL-G does not seem to exist.

With the latest build, you can select TV standard more easily, by holding down CNTRL and SHIFT, and pressing F key repeatedly, to cycle through all available standards.

OK, PAL-G is a valid format. Microsoft documentation missed it  :(

The question remains whether it should be PAL-G or PAL-B for Germany (I am more inclined to believe it is PAL-G since my confidence in Microsoft documentation is getting lower everyday).

ok... doing ctrl-shift-F and cycling through all available fromats didn't change anything. just black.

pal-b seems to be the right one for germany. my other tv software (sh*wsh*ft*r)  doesn't show pal-g at all and it works using pal-b ....

anything I could test?

That seems to be a dumb question. Germany uses both, one for UHF, the other for VHF.

Maybe that's why the sometimes say "Germany: Pal-B/G"

Ingo

p.s.: do you have a link where I can get some information about all that (like differences between different pal versions?)

No, I do not have a (good) link for that. All I did was to  do a google search on "TV Standard", and it gave me a number of sites that have lists of standards in countries of the world (some lists are outdated). I have not found any sites that would give some more detailed explanation.

Did you happen to have installed new drivers from Hauppauge? If you have, I would suggest you reinstall. If not, I would suggest you download their latest driver and install. In either case, make sure you use hcwClear.exe program (found in Hauppauge's installation folder) to clean out any previous installation before reinstalling.

In the past there were some people who had various problems and were able solve them by reinstalling.

I put my Hauppauge WinTV card in yesterday and had no problem using it. I know that my card is different from yours, and I am not in Germany, so it is not possible for me to reproduce your problem.

no, didn't reinstall my tv card's driver. I'm still on last years btwincap driver (something like november). note, I'm not using hauppauge's driver, they just caused to many problems.

Ingo,

I may have found a cause for your trouble. Please go to TV Options property sheet, and click the Recording tab. Then check which recording profile you have selected. If it is either "640 x 240 JRiver Codec Timeshift, WMV Recording 29.97fps", or "640 x 480 JRiver Codec 29.97fps" (the first or the third preset profiles), that may be the cause. In both of these cases, a 640 x 480 video resolution is set on the capture pin of the capture device, and Hauppauge cards can not handle it.
Hauppauge cards can not display preview video when the capture pin is set at 640 x 480 or higher.

If this is the case, please try selecting the second profile, "640 x 240 JRiver Codec 29.97fps" or anything with lower resolution.

Hope this solves your problem.

Yaobing,

good news. real good news. it works.
Even though it was already set to use 640x240 and I didn't change much on that side (re-added a profile that uses 25fps which was lost in yesterdays reinstall....). Updated to .155 and it works. kind of.
- I now get a live tv picture (and sound).

now the bad stuff:
- when I change anything in tv-options (like changing the name of a recording profile), I get loads of 'Failed to acces TV tuner' boxes and I'm back at black (and muted) and have to kill MC from the taskmanager
- when I try to record I get a 'error in application box' (in german) and hitting Ok exits MC
- when I start timeshifting, MC just exits

ok... and now the real good news. It works. without any problems. Even recording/timeshifting is fine.

The problem was a setting in DivXG400 ('Load filter=force', changed that to '=Only if necessary').
I need this filter to overcome a hardware limitation of my Matrox G400 card. It can only make use of its hardware overlay for video sizes multiple of 16. DivXG400 is available from http://www.tac.ee/~prr/videoutils/
The strange thing is that I didn't change that setting since quite some time.... and MC worked even with it a few builds ago)

As for capturing resolutions with more than 288 lines (for PAL), this is a hardware limitation of all 878/848 based cards. A driver can emulate preview pins even on higher resoultions, but some just don't do it. Using the generic bt8x8 driver from http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/ solves this problem.  I've been using this since last summer for stability reasons (Hauppauge's were just horrible) and recommend them for everyone with a bt8x8 based card.

Thanks for your help and patience,

Ingo

p.s.: are you going to add 25fps presets for us PAL users?
p.p.s.: two features I'd like see for 9.1:
- audio compression (using lame acm)
- support for multiple audio streams in avi files (like morgan stream switcher)
p.p.p.s.: maybe you should add a list of installed DirectShow filters to 'System Info'
