PROBLEMS (maybe bugs) with WMP
« on: April 15, 2003, 04:09:32 am »

There were some posts last night in the bug thread that may or may not be bugs.  I'm starting this thread to see if we can learn more about them and to keep the discussion out of the bug thread.

If you're having such a problem, please provide the version of MC and the version of WMP that you are using.  The full version of WMP is important.  Beta releases of WMP9 won't work and should be updated before reporting anything.

Here's an example of the kind of thing that may be our problem but may be a Windows or WMP problem:

----------------------------------------------------------------
[from DWanderson]

"1. When I attempt to play any WMA file I get the following Error dialog: "Playback Engine: Media Jukebox is unable to acquire license for this file. Windows Media Error: 0x80070005." This error only occurs when trying to play these files from the server on another computer. In recent prior versions I got a different error code, but the same behavior.

Despite some theories that this is linked to DRM being activated in the WMA files, this does not appear to be the case for a number of reasons: (i) Media Center has no problem playing the files on any PC when they are loaded off the LAN, i.e. not streamed using the server; (ii) I have no problem playing them with Windows Media Player, Musicmatch Jukebox, Media Jukebox and even prior versions of the Media Center Server (e.g. prior to 9.0.130); and (iii) it is my strong recollection that when these files were ripped, DRM was turned off.  "

Hi Jim, i have the same problem, using media server on the another computer we can't play Wma files, both have the same OS ( win 2000 ) same version of Wmp ( Portuguese version 9.00.00.2980 ) and both have the same MC9 version, one is licensed but the other is on the trial stage, both machines have DirectX 9.a. The wma files don't have the DRM protection activated, other audio files play's well ( APE, MPC, MP3 and OGG ).

So the problem ONLY occurs when you use Media Server?

No problems on my network!

Playing wma file on 9.0.149 on WXP-SP1.
WXP Library shared
Playing wma file on 9.0.148 on W2K-SP3.
In both places wmp9 plugin installed!

So, in my case there is no problem with Media Server!

I cannot reproduce this. Would you try a test? Rip a CD to a WMA file, or convert a song, so that you have a WMA file created today. Try that file to see if it makes a difference.

My WMA files were create long time ago (before MC9), as you see they work on both my systems!
