Help File For Media Center and how does YADB work?
« on: April 13, 2003, 02:24:21 am »

Might be a dummy question, but I'm using Media Center for a while now and still have the feeling there are some functions I don't know.

The included help file relates to Media Jukebox 8. Does a help file (pdf?) for Media Center exist???

Second, is it possible to use YADB for tagging of mp3 files (not CD)?

YADB always retrieves nothing! How does YADB work? What is the criteria by which it identifes tracks?

Don't let me stand in the rain and help my poor Media Center knowledge!

Help file is currently being worked on.

I'm sure YADB can tag mp3 files IF the fingerprinting is in the database. I've actually done a couple of apl files to try it out. Worked pretty good.

I've at least tried a hundred files - but for none I've received tag data (also pretty popular tracks)

I remember it worked with Media Jukebox 3 months ago. What is the fingerprint? How does YADB identify a track?

The user has to send the fingerprinting from the tracks to YADB. I think submitting CD track info (just the names) does not send the fingerprinting and that is why you're probably not getting anything.

Most people probably don't know that it is there or are too lazy to do it.

I'm not the expert in this area. It's just what I've read so far.

>>What is the fingerprint? How does YADB identify a track?

I don't know exactly how it works and how it identifies them but I know there was a few threads about it already. I would try searching for 'fingerprint' and see what shows up.

I did a search and here is a quote from gateley:

Quote
Track lookup uses a fingerprint of a single track to determine the title/author and other info for a track. Even if you submit tracks in blocks (like a CDs worth of tracks), the lookup is based on the characteristics of each track (and it doesn't matter if it is mp3/ape/whatever).

When you rip a CD and submit the info to YADB (via a right click on the CD icon and "submit to CD database"), you are only filling in the CD lookup/CD lookup for recording database, not the track lookup database.

If you highlight a song (or group of songs), right click on them, and tools->submit track info to YADB, this only fills the track lookup DB, and
not the CD lookup DB.

Hi,

Single track lookup should work.
Choose a well-known track. Select it (so it is highlighted). Right click, and wander through the menus to "Lookup Track Info from YADB". Click this.

If it doesn't work, let me know what time it was, and I'll see if I can track it down.

YADB track lookup unfortunately never works - I can do what I want. It works fine for CD lookup.

I again tried it with well-known songs (Bon Jovi - Everyday, Mick Jagger - Visions of paradise) Time was 4.00 - 4.20pm

I hope you can find out what the reason could be.

Except of this - This software is really fantastic and I'm sure that this quality will be rewarding!

Did you upload track info for those tracks?  The data may not be there otherwise.  The track database started only a couple months ago and so it's smaller than the CD database.

You can see the stats here:

OK, now it worked for one Queen song (we will rock you) but so many other popular songs could not been found. The statistics on www.yadb.com state a high success rate.

206,092 individual songs are not really few! So I must assume the fingerprint of my files is not ok. Again, can anybody tell me how it works?

It looks at the music no matter what it is encded with and it gets a finger print, it then looks in a database for this finger print submited by other users like your self (i submited about 30,000 of them) when you get all your files fields entered please submit your files so the database will incease.

your not going to get a detailed run down on how it works.

I just added 353 files for track lookup. It's not much, but every little bit helps. I'll be doing more when I have time. I'm just too busy with other stuff right now.
