Compression Field for Video Files (bug or feature?)
« on: December 27, 2020, 03:40:19 pm »

I noticed starting in MC 27, the compression field has changed.  In previous versions I would see something like this
Quote
mkv video (video: hevc, audio:eac3)
. Now I see things in CAPITOLS for example
Quote
mkv video (video: HEVC, audio: E-AC3]

My question is if this is a bug?  Or do capitols signify anything special?  I think it's a bug and I would much prefer to see consistency.  But I also see some new information, but I am having trouble deciphering it.  For example, what used to show up as
Quote
mkv (video: h264, audio:aac)
, now shows up as
Quote
mkv (video:h264, audio: LAV AAC ADTS)
.  When I look at this info in Mediainfo, I do not see any mention of
Quote
LAV
or
Quote
ADTS
.  And in this last case ADTS is definately not a DTS soundtrack, it was AAC.  So I wonder where this information is being picked up from.  I like to see more information, but I would also like to see a legend on what these acronyms mean.

I actually think Caps could be useful if they signify some extra attribute, but if the Cap thing is just a bug, I would prefer lower case.  It's been lower case for many releases.

That being said, I will again ask for more information on this field.  I would like to see whether the video is 8, 10 or 12-bit.  Also, and this is even more important to me is tell me if it's an Atmos soundtrack.  Mediainfo does this, so I'm sure all this information can be retrieved and displayed.

Add:  Or one more bug in this field.  Opus soundtracks are now being shown as "unknown codec" even though it plays just fine.  The last number of releases showed "opus" audio correctly.

Thank you and keep up the good work!
