Media Server Problems
« on: April 09, 2003, 02:46:52 am »

(Sorry about the length, but am trying to provide as much info as I can.)

I'm still having problems with Media Server.

I can connect Ok remotely. The library loads. I select a random group of files and initiate Play. The first several files play back OK, with some initial buffering. I then lose the connection and get an error message that MC has not been able to locate the last several files, and I should check the path.

I then clear Playing Now and attempt to play other files. MC hangs, and shows 'Waiting' in the playback view.  I exit MC, wait a few minutes and reopen. When I try to connect to my home library, I get rejected, with a message telling me that I'm maxxed out on allowable connections (3).

This problem is not specific to any file types. I usually restrict selections to 128 kbps because of bandwidth limitations, and most selected files are mp3 cbr, with a few vbr. None of the files are defective - play OK locally.

When I check the Media Server log at home, I  find no indication anyone else has been attempting to connect.

the following come  from the MS log. I get these failure messages both after attempting to connect remotely, and after opening MS at home following installation of a new build (partial):

04/08/03 23:30:30 - private sharing thread started
04/09/03 01:30:29 - connection closed?
04/09/03 01:30:30 - read_http_request failed: -1

04/09/03 04:49:33 - ready for another connection
04/09/03 04:49:33 - private sharing thread started

No new programs at either end to account for this. No changes in office firewall. I'm using Sygate Personal Firewall at home, normal setting, and encounter this w/n its open. Just installed 145 at home; 142 in the office, but this has been a problem for the last 6-8 builds, when I run the same at both ends. Prior to that, MS worked quite well, with only normal drop-outs in heavy traffic.

At home, I can connect through MS almost immediately, and have no problems with playback. Here's an extract from the log for my present home connection (the error message may mark where I aborted one file by clicking on the Next File arrow):

If you're using a login/password, try not using one, to see if that's the problem.  We made a change that could affect this.

Jim:

Not that - don't use passwords.

I did install 145 in the office, ATM its playing OK, with normal buffering. I'll let it play through for the rest of the day, see what happens.

Thanks for the suggestion...HTH

Let me know if 145 breaks. I've made a lot of changes in the past weeks, and could have easily messed something up.

I'm having the same problems I've reported before about Media Server.

It's mainly all username and password stuff. Any ideas about what's causing it?

145 is better, but there's still something going on.

MC finished playing an extended playlist. I added about 10 files to Playing Now without clearing it 1st. MC quickly flipped through the selected files one after the  other without opening anything, came to the last file and left it in 'Waiting' mode.

I then tried opening single files by double-clicking - same result.

I left it alone for a few minutes, then compiled another queue, right clicked and selected 'Play. Its now doing that quite normally.

Connection to server did not break.  System info for client below. Resources are quite low, probably because a number of office applications are running at the same time:

It finally petered out, with 'Waiting', then refusing to reopen because there were too many other connectins.

This is what I find in the log for that time frame:

04/09/03 15:02:28 - streaming 268  D:/E - K/Johnny Griffin/Johnny Griffin - Johnny Griffin's Studio Jazz Party - 04 - Toe-tappin'.mp3

04/09/03 15:11:33 - received a connection
04/09/03 15:11:33 - ready for another connection
04/09/03 15:11:33 - private sharing thread started
04/09/03 15:11:33 - Only allow 3 connection
04/09/03 15:11:33 - sending 416

And so on. I can't understand how there could have been 3 other connections - nothing shows in the MS log.

Hi HTH,

Thanks for the info, it helps a lot. I didn't get a chance to look at it today, but I will tomorrow. I think it'll be an easy fix, so hopefully tomorrow night.

MS is open ATM but not attempting to connect through it.

Hope that helps.

Hi HTH,

I've been using Media Server for 2 or 3 hours now with no problem. I am doing it without hitting the network (Media Server and Media Center are on the same machine). I tried it for a long time just playing, and then started hitting the next button to go to the next song, but it's still going.

Is there anything you are doing besides playing or hitting the next button?

Can you try serving to the same machine (like I am doing) to see if the problem shows up or not?

Thanks,

j

John:

Am playing through MS at home - MS and MC on same machine. No problems. Ditto, when I keep hitting Next File button.

I've tested this alternative whenever I've had difficulty. Its worked OK locally even when I'm having trouble with remote connections.

The problems are quite specific to attempted connections to MS from my office.

I thought it might be resource limitations at the office - shared T-1 with lots of traffic at times - but whenever MC craters there, I revert to Rhapsody, and that plays without interruption. (Rhapsody is not open when I'm trying to use MC/MS.) Same with other streams.

Doof and Ken: Is this like what you're getting?

Try connecting at 24,147.89.61:80 and see what happens. And thanks for pursuing this issue.
