Bug report - Black Subtitles
« on: May 02, 2021, 03:51:29 am »

Playback of video with subtitles in srt format results in all black subtitles.

The normally white subtitles are rendered black.

Changing the subtitle color doesn’t work in this case (changing font type does).

The issue seems related to the HDR colorspace, but the file I looked up with MediaInfo reports ‘colorspace: YUV’.

If it helps I can upload the file (1.5 GB) or the MediInfo txt file.

A similar issue I found:

https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=149863
https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/22447
direct3d11 shaders are not mapping subpicture to HDR

System information:

Windows 10 Home 2019 version 1909
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 3GB, Nvidia driver 27.21.14.5751
Media Center 27.0.85 (64-bit)
Red October HQ
Tested on file:
mkv 1920x1080 25 fps video: AVC h264 colorspace: YUV, audio: ac3
Text: UTF-8

Ps. Streaming to JRemote 2 (Andoid) results in black subtitles.
Playing in third party app on IPad results in white subtitles

Have you checked the settings in your library. Tools Options, Video search down the bottom for 'Subtitle' and/or 'OSD'. Mine are white and yellow respectively?

At OPTIONS -> Subtitle text color (for text based subtitles), you can change the subtitle color, but every once in a while I get a movie or tv episode of which I can’t change the color. It’s black.

If it only happens with a particular movie, and is not a problem in general, we might need to have a peek at whats going on in that file.
Easiest would be to just share a chunk from the beginning of the file, just enough to have a few subtitles in.

You can split the file with DGSplit
http://rationalqm.us/dgsplit/dgsplit12.zip

Set the size to maybe 100mb, stop after 1 chunk, check if that part contains a broken subtitle, or make it bigger if nothing is in there yet.
You can share the link privately to hendrik at jriver dot com, as well.

Okay, I get back to you when I succeeded the split.
