It's alive! IT'S ALIVE!!!
« on: April 04, 2003, 04:44:16 am »

I finally got broadband. So I finally decided to play with Media Server.

So here I am, at work, listening to my home library.

This is really sweet. I can finally delete all of the mp3's of my work computer's drive and free up some space for actual work-related stuff!

Our IT department is going to hate me for sucking up all the bandwidth, though.

Oh, yeah... I am the IT department!

BUAWHAHAHAHA!!!

If you don't mind, could you explain how u set it up.. I seem to be able to set it up internal to my home network. However, I cannot seem to figure out how to do it over the internet. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

HI mlipscom,

To be able to use Media Server on two distant computers (home & work).
You first need a fixed (or known for the session) IP address. Not all broadband ISP will provide fixed IP (well at least my place (france)).
You also have to make sure that there is no firewalls or special security somewhere in between the two computers.
For example I can't personaly listen to my home lib at work since the security at work will not establish the connection to an untrusted IP (my home server !!). Well I could if I go and ask the IT department (not managed by Doof here !), fill in a long form stating the importance of my home media server for the overall strategy of my organization, bla bla...  :D

Thanks for the reply.. So once you get all that setup, how do you point to your home media server? It looks like all you can do is "Search For Media Servers" not point to your home IP address. Or it's very likely I'm missing something. Thanks again..

I think you will find an instruction thread on Media Server.  Take a look in the Instructions thread near the top of this board.

You can enter an IP address in the Library Management section.

And if you're on a broadband line without a fixed IP (like most are here in Norway), you can use the system http://www.no-ip.com to get a fix on your address. I use it at times on my ISDN and it works perfectly.  ;D

www.dyndns.org - they do a really nice free service too.

As an update tool I use: Direct Update which works VERY nicely. :)
