Having Trouble with Import

I'm using MC9 Build 137.
I have Windows XP on my PC.


I'm having trouble with the import feature in MC9.

I recently changed to MC9 and imported my music collection at that time.  All of my music is in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\default\My Documents\My Music.

I had 1 folder of music on another drive that I copied in to C:\Documents and Settings\default\My Documents\My Music.

I tried to import again from this folder.  I get the following message:

"You aaare attempting to import from a directory which Media Jukebox normally excludes.  

Are you sure you want to import from C:\Documents and Settings\default\My Documents\My Music."

I say OK.

Nothing imports.

Any suggestions?

Are you sure they're where you think they are?

Have you set the file associations so that MC imports the file types you want?

You don't have to move the files.  You can import from several places.  Just use the little button with the dots to browse to wherever the files are.

The reason I moved the files is they were on a removeable drive. I wanted to get everything on the same PC.

When I bring up the Import Media Files Box, everything looks fine.  The Search directory is correct.  When I click on the ..., I can see exactly where I am.  I can also see the folder I'm looking for under it.

Still when I do a search, I get the messaaage that this directory is normally excluded.  I'm not sure why that is, as this is probably the most common directory for music.

And when I say OK, it does nothing.

I tried again, doing everything the same except I selected specific folder I had copied in.  This time it came up with the same message (You are attempting to import from a directory which Media Jukebox normally excludes.  Are you sure you want to import from ...).  This time, if I say yes all of my files are imported.

Looks like 2 bugs.  

First bug - the message saying Media Julebox normally excludes the directory.  (this is MC, not, MJ - how can it normally exclude a directory which is unique as in my second case, or My Music in the first case)

Second bug - when it searches under My Music, it does not find new directory and it's content.  When I search directly in the directory, it finds everything.

Anyway, thanks for the quick reply.

Click On Adavanced And Make Sure The Media Your Trying To Import Is Checked.

Also The Option

[X] Search For Files In Sub Dirs

It Works For Me.

That's not the problem.  

Does not work when I search My Music.  It comes back and says:

Files scanned    0
New files found 0
Failed to import 0

Total files in library 7094

If I go one level down.  This is the one I pointed to before.  It says:

Files scanned    31
New files found 0
Failed to import 0

Total files in library 7094

31 is the number of songs in the folder.

If I go up 1 level, to My Documents, it comes back aand says:

Files scanned    854
New files found 0
Failed to import 0

Total files in library 7094

I assume 854 is the number of folders I have below My documents, including sub folders.

So... for some reason it does not even try to scan the files when I point to My Music.  Maybe it's a data problem.  How can I delete the entire library and rescan?

Magic,
If you plan to delete your library and re-import it all, why not move all your files to the root dir so that all your music is at:  C:\Music\blah....
It's MUCH easier to access for you, will stop any other problems like this and is easier accessible for anyone using the computer, etc etc, waffle waffle, on and on...


Windows XP does put it in that directory as standard but that's just because the windows programmers decided that was a nice easy directory to put it in (plus they were programming it so that each user would get their own seperate music directory miles away from the other users (I guess they dont believe in letting their friends listen to their music)).

You can easily however change the settings in Windows to make it realise that your My Music Folder is now at C:\Music
If you have Tweak-UI installed you can do it easily from there.

Just a suggestion :)

Magic_Randy,

This problem will be fixed in next build. I don't know for sure why this is happening on your computer. The only system directory we skip during import is windows installation directory.

I appreciate all of the help, but the problem is getting worse.

First of all, I upgraded to build 140.  I tried again.  Now I get a message for every sub-directory under My Music.  I have hundreds, so I had to kill the program.

Next I decided to clear the library and reimport.

Clearing the library was no problem.  When I did a new import, I get a message that "You are attempting to import from a directory that Media Jukebox normally excludes.  Are you sure you want to import from "C:\Documents and Settings\default\My Documents\My Music"

When I click OK, it prompts for the sub-directories.  Same message, hundreds of them.  

So, now I have no library.

An earlier suggestion was to move my music up higher.  I can do that if needed.  I just have to change a number of other things, plus I have libraries ffrom multiple other products that I would also need to rebuild.

Suggestions?

OK, I installed build 141 hoping that would help.

It does not (did not show in the fix list, but I thought I would try anyway).

I did an import, but it was a very legnthy process.

When I do the import, I get the same message I mentioned before.

Are you sure you want to import from C:\Documents and Settings\default\My Documents\My Music."

I say OK.

I next get the same message, 1 level down (the artist).

I say OK.

I next get the same message 1 more level down (the CD within artist).

I say OK.  It imports that CD.

I next get the same message for the next CD for that artist.

So to get the entire collection, I have to say OK

Once for My Music

Once more for each artist

Once more for each CD.


I tried going up to My Documents.  It skips My Music folder but imports anything in any other folders.

I tried going up to C:\.  It imports everrything except whats in C:\Documents and Settings\default\My Documents\My Music.

I'm assuming that if I move My Music up to C:\ it may work.  I've not tried this.

I don't know, but some thoughts.

1.  Check the permissions of the directory at the top.

2.  You didn't install MC in My Music did you?

3.  Are you logged into Windows?

From waht I can see, it is related to the directory name itself.

1.  Check the permissions of the directory at the top.
Does not look like a problem, same as all other directories.

2.  You didn't install MC in My Music did you?
In the default directory (under program files)

3.  Are you logged into Windows?
No login, I'm using Windows XP Home Edition


So I tried a few things.

1) Import music from another directory.  Works every time.  The directory can be under My Documents (which is whre My Music is today), under root, or anywhere else.

2) If I rename my directory  (My Music to My Music Collection), the import works everytime.

If I rename My Music Collection back to My Music, it does not work.

Have you tested this with Windows XP Home Edition?

Create a user account and log in to it.  Then transfer the music to the My Music folder under that account.

A lot of people (including me) run it on WinXP Home.

I'm guessing the error message you're getting is coming from Windows, not from MC.

The purpose of user accounts is to enable different settings when multiple people use the same computer.  In that case, you should set up an account for each user.

Setting up a user account will probably make it work, but I think there is a bug in the MC9 software.   It probably only shows up when you do not have multiple user accounts (e.g. things are in default).

I will just rename the directory and the problem will go away for me, but the bug will still be there.
