Media Center 9.0.140 beta
« on: April 01, 2003, 12:36:18 pm »

Media Center 9.0.140 beta is available.

Some things may not work.  If that worries you, please wait until Media Center is out of beta.

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter90140.exe

1. NEW: Added Ctrl+Shift+A as a shortcut for "Invert Selection".
2. Changed: View Filter information is now shown in the title bar.
3. Fixed: Submition of new CDs to YADB was not working corretly.
4. Changed: Improved "don't update tags while playing" system so changes get applied as soon as playback stops or switches tracks.
5. Changed: Greatly reduced memory requirements in thumbnail views. (with no performance penalty)
6. NEW: Holding down [Shift] while going to windowed mode will prevent MC from auto-minimizing.
7. Fixed: Added special handling of "Play" and "Add to Playing Now" when fired from inside of Playying Now.
8. Fixed: When External encoder was initialized it was always displaying options dialog.
9. Fixed: Media Jukebox was displaying Import Files dialog when it was started using Connect command line parameter and media library was empty.
10. Changed: Analyzing silence with the audio analyzer will now fail instead of return strange values.
11. NEW: Remote Server (formerly Web Remote) now built into Media Center.  Configurable from Options -> Startup.
12. Changed: Some Media Library pieces have unique icons. (temporary -- better icons will follow)

(p.s. thanks to Benjamin Sweet and Daniel Ellison for their work on Remote Server -- now an integrated piece of Media Center :D )

MPC doesnt work remotely. I am using media server. Mp3 and Mpc work fine locally. Aparently the problem is with Media Server. I am re-importing my library, just in case......Grrrrr. Oh by the way a never discovered bug is this: if you try to play a file, MC goes and try to find the servers and bummm a Media core error. Those to send or not to send to microsoft. I love those errors.. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(. After few minutes...... No way jose, I get the "waiting", when I try to play a mpc file, (I dont know about mp3, because I hate mp3) using Media Server.

Are we going to be able to create field types that work like keywords?

There won't be any more features until we've released what we have.

It's possible we've broken something in Media Server.  Our penguin-in-residence has made a lot of changes in it the last two weeks.  None of them are yet visible.

Gridlines are not aligned with column tabs. This occurs only when unskinned. *This is not a video driver problem.*

There is a flaw with the vis Damaged Layers II & III, I think. Without cover art the MC icon is displayed and it looks as if it was hit by buckshot. Is this intentional? Hence, the damaged layers...

Start a new thread.  Spill your guts.

Just wondering....

When is a song listed as played?

I just finished a song a bit over 3 minutes long and the "Last Played" field says that song played 1 minute, 42 seconds ago.

It sould make sense if it was the end of the file (or whenever it flips over to the next song before the song ends) but this seems to be somewhere in the middle of the song.

Thanks,

Update to problem with launching asx files from browsers.

Nikolay,

I uninstalled MC and Mozilla 1.3. I installed MC 140 by itself. This corrected the problem of not being able to launch asx content from IE 6. However, when launching the Windows Media content from the website below, MC isn't picking up the second <ENTRY> in the asx file. The first entry is a :16 second advertisement and the second entry is the live stream. I don't know if is because the asx file is mal-formed or because there are <banner> entries, but Windows Media Player 9.0 appears to handle this file without problems.

http://wtopnews.com/index.php?sid=1735&nid=162

Here is the asx file for reference:

After re-installing Mozilla 1.3, I am still unable to launch Windows Media content when MC is setup to handle WM. I get either no action at all (from the website above) to receiving this message box: "Please select file(s) to play" from MC when launced from the website below.

http://www.wgms.com/index.php?nid=181

If I setup WMP to handle WM content, WMP is launched correctly from Mozilla. Also RealPlayer is launched correctly from both IE 6 and Mozilla 1.3.

In researching this problem, I noticed that MC doesn't show up in the "Choose a default media player" section of Set Program Access and Defaults. Could this be part of the problem?

When rip+encoding, scrolling thru the Media Library causes a lot of extra screen refreshes in the ML window.

Matt... I ran into this problem, also. I'm using the mouse wheel to set Alarms and Timers. It was necessary to click in AlarmClock's window after making it active. I believe this will be confusing to the user, so I developed a fix that has proven reliable (2 weeks test time so far).

void CPanel::OnMouseMove(UINT nFlags, CPoint point)
{
     if (GetActiveWindow() == AfxGetMainWnd() && GetFocus() != pAlarmClockDlg)
           if (pAlarmClockDlg->alarmClockShowing())
                 pAlarmClockDlg->SetFocus();

     mouseMove(nFlags, point);
}

CPanel is derived from CStatic. The plug-in client area is fully covered by a number of CPanels.

You probably have easy ways to determine what child window is active, but this is how I set the status of pACD->alarmClockShowing() from within the plug-in:

void CAlarmClockDlg::OnShowWindow(BOOL bShow, UINT nStatus)
{
     if (bShow)
     {
           SetFocus();
           mAlarmClockShowing = true;
     }
     else
           mAlarmClockShowing = false;
}

(unrelated code removed for clarity, including initialization during MC startup)

Your results appear correct. Somewhere around .110-119 the Last Played field was set when playback reached the middle of the song. Lots of people didn't want to listen to the whole song to have it marked Played. I'm sure this is an artifact of that change.

This could be fixed by "re-updating" the last-played time when a song ends or is terminated, but there are other significant issues at this time that probably deserve J.R's attention.

Modified: If the START TIME of the song was set at the halfway point, it wouldn't need to be re-updated, and most users would understand that Last Played was measured from the start of the song.

I found all my video files under Audio in Media Library and they are only playing sound. ?

Haven't played video files for a while so I don't know if it's related to this build.

They are playing correct in WMP9.

It appears that the "3D Appearance" flag is not set for Menus in MC9. Dialog boxes have 3D borders, controls have 3D appearance, as do the main frame and scroll bars. Main menu items and Popup menu items are missing the 3D borders:

Didn't see this listed as fixed in .140:

Ctrl++, Ctrl+- don't control volume. Other player shortcuts work fine, even Ctrl+M for mute, and if I type Ctrl++, the player will display the volume level--but it won't change.

Bugs for Media Center ver. 9.0.140 beta

  • Video : Playback of any filetype through WMP other than WMV causes strange behavior. Although MC is capable of showing every video file in the playlist, every other track change fails. So if I start playback of a list of mpg's and\or avi's, MC will play the first one, and then on a track change (either manual or automatic) MC stops playback and the Player Window displays the text "Waiting". A click on Next or Prev will play the next file just fine. If, while MC is "Waiting" I click Stop, MC displays an error. WMP9 is installed on this system.

  • Video : MEGA-ME isn't sizing videos properly (those being played by WMP). They always take up the entire Playing Now window. Fullscreen is fine.

  • Video : Quicktime doesn't clear the Playing Now window before playing the next file. You can see remnants of the previous file beneath the new one.

  • Video : Quicktime playback is really flaky. MC doesn't respond as quickly as normal while Quicktime files are playing. I have Quicktime 6 installed.

  • Explorer Extensions : The right click menu in Explorer still says "Media Jukebox" instead of "Media Center".

  • My Computer : MC displays greyed out menu items for "Delete" and "Rename" on folders. Are these unfinished features? Or should these menu items be removed entirely? Preferably they will be finished, as the ability to rename a folder from within MC would be a huge help.

  • mini-me : On skins that use an actual thumb button on Playlists (instead of a scrollbar type) if you scroll to the top of the playlist, then double click a song to start it playing, the thumb button jumps to bottom. The list itself stays where it is. This also occurs if you scroll to the bottom and double click a song. The thumb button jumps to the top.

  • CD Burning : MC is still asking me if I want to burn a Data or Audio CD when I add a data only folder from My Computer within MC.

  • Search : I'm using the criteria "folder=\Complete Albums" as a search criteria and MC is seperating the "Complete" and "Albums" portions, so that if I click on "Folder : \Complete Albums" and choose Remove, "Albums" is left behind. The same happens if I try to Edit by Typing. Not sure to what other keywords this is happening with.

  • Fill Track Numbers from List Order really took a huge hit when File Properties was integrated into the interface. It's now impossible to re-order files in Content View without first adding them to a playlist, which hinders the usability of this feature.

  • Clean File Properties : Running this on a file by an artist with a name like T.A.T.U. results in T.a.T.U.

  • Search : Picking the Full Albums Search modifier should be a toggle menu rather than just an add-only option. Choosing Full Albums more than once results in multiple Full Album criteria being added to the search bar.

  • Search : Date related search items are using a nearly impossible to understand format based on seconds in order to specify criteria.

  • Search : The Sorting box still doesn't offer much clue as to what certain modifiers like -d accomplish. It just lets me know I can use it. But what does it do? And what other options like it are available?

  • Playing Now : Moving the column with the playing icon in it to another position takes the playing icon along with it.

  • Playing Now : Deleting the currently playing file from Playing Now stops playback. Clicking Play results in an error message that says "Please select file(s) to play." Double clicking another file in Playing Now will restart playback. Clicking Next does nothing, but clicking Prev, then Play plays the first file in the list.

  • View Scheme Groups : Using the wizard to create search criteria for a view scheme isn't filtering out things based on the criteria specified for the group that the view scheme is in. For instance, creating a View Scheme in the Audio Group, if I try to specify a genre in the search criteria, I'm being presented with genres that only belong to images or videos, etc. These shouldn't show up, as the View Scheme Group should be filtering these out.

  • Search : If you choose a Search Criteria, then choose Edit by Typing, and hit Ctrl-C to copy and go to a different smartlist and hit Ctrl-V to paste, the entire list of Search Criteria is copied instead of just the one you wanted.

  • Adding images and music to Playing Now isn't consistent. If audio is already in Playing Now, then Adding images to Playing Now results in those images being tacked on to the end of Playing Now (but are never shown - even when their turn in Playing Now arrives), if music is played first, then images are played, Playing Now is wiped and only images are shown, but if images are played first, and then music is added, the desired result of images and audio simultaneously is acheived.

  • If I Play images, then Play a playlist with music and video in it, the slideshow clears immediately even if the first file to play is Audio.

  • When viewing images and listening to music, if Playing Now contains a video, playing that video will clear all images from slideshow.

  • Image List View : This doesn't select files correctly. If you select one file, then hold control to select a few more, that works. If you hold down shift and select a range, that works as well. But when holding down Control + Shift to add a range of files to the currently selected files, all of the currently selected files become unselected.

Sound recorder isnt working.

I get the sound alright through the speakers, and when setting the automatic rec level, MC does react to hight distortion etc, but it doesnt record.
I hit "start" but nothing happens. "Wait for sound.." is unchecked.

When hitting "stop" because "start" didnt do anything, nothing happens. When then hitting "exit" in sound recorder menu, MC hangs for a while and then crashes.

Reproducable.

Hi,

Ripping problems seems to have vanished with .140 : no more long initializing time with some drives, CD playback is Ok.

Wow ! there's now a 'recenlty ripped' playlist I did not noticed before, nice.

Still some visualization studio bugs :
Text editor save button for the text element does not seem to save any change !
Track info or visualization does not display new MC9 fields and legacy MJ8 custom fields.

Very, very  nice icons, thanks.
Would be nice to have differents icons for genres (Jazz, Rock, ) :) (Hmm ! Jim will kill me ;) )

All'n all MC looks pretty good now, beau travail les gars !

Have a nice day

Hello ,

Thanks for this new update. :D

Remaining Bugs  :(:

In Visualization Studio CUSTOM_1, CUSTOM_2, CUSTOM_3 do not return value.
In TrackInfo : TRACKINFO_INSERT_CUSTOM1, TRACKINFO_INSERT_CUSTOM2, TRACKINFO_INSERT_CUSTOM3 do not return value either
Will you also define access to Composer field as COMPOSER and TRACKINFO_INSERT_COMPOSER ?

Enhancements ::)
1/ Is there any shortcut for PLAY immediately  (like if we do >right click >PLAY) ?

2/ The program file of MediaCenter is  MEDIA JUKEBOX.EXE (it was MMJB is the past) the fact that the filename contains a space cause problem with some remote control tools (Keyspan DMR for example).
When you will rename it for MEDIACENTER could you please avoid to put a space in the filename ?

The new Remote Server together with the new NetRemote beta is great! Finally I don't have to watch carefully all the time so something is in every zone's playlist, since NetRemote would crash MC whenever connected to a zone with an empty playlist. And it's distinctly faster as well. It only takes about 10 seconds to open the full Artist/Album view in NetRemote, that took about 20 seconds before (yes, I do have an insane amount of artists in the library).

But one thing: Isn't it possible to get MC to do a redraw of the Playing Now playlist whenever something is changed in it from Remote Server? Now it updates the album cover part of Playing Now but not the playlist itself. It looks kind of silly when you see an empty playlist, hear music playing and see an album cover at the same time. Except for that: Great job! This was obviously the best way to utilize Ben's and Daniel's great work in your own great work!  8)

Special caracters in Media Library
« Reply #25 on: April 01, 2003, 09:40:53 pm »

I don't know how long this has been going on (I remember it worked at one point, but I seldom play these artists), but the norwegian special carachters appears under "others" instead of under their own heading, like they once did. There's one norwegian artist called Åge Aleksandersen, and he appears with 'Nsync and Øystein Sunde.

Bugs still outstanding -

SmartLists -

If I try to reproduce the provided 'Task - no images' it fails on the 'Image Fle' clause.

If I try to use the Wizard to set Image File = <empty>, although I tick the relevent box, it does not save the setting - I am left with an empty clause.

If I use the Edit (by Typing) option, I can set it - but then I get nothing matching - even though it has matches on the provided smartlist!

Web Radio Playback
I am still unable to play anything except some of the Featured Stations - I get the Warning Dialog box saying 'Please select file(s) to play'.
If it is relevent I am working through ICS on Win2k

Duration Mismatch
If I look at a specific Album in Media Library, I am told that the total duration is a little over 1 Hour, but if I then tell MC to Burn a CD of the Album, it tells me that it will fit on a single CD (98% of 74 minute CD). Having burnt the CD, all the tracks are there!
What gives ?  If it is relevent, I have not specified that it should delete silence.

The option to submit CD information to YADB is only available when 'Online CD-lookup' is enabled in 'Options' > 'Device settings'.

I just figured it out after months of wondering why I could not find it.

The automatic look-up function can be annoying sometimes and I suspect many turn it off and use manual lookup and thus have the same problem. If so it may explain the slow growth of the DB.

Still can't play tv through Media Center.  This has become a problem in last few builds but can't remember when?  I see message that tv starting, then...get message which says "Failed to play TV. (unknown error)"  Is this related to me loading the DirectX9a drivers which I read orginally has a problem with ATI video?  My TV plays just fine through my regular ATI Multimedia Center but I was just checking...  Please help because NOW I have set up a computer with my new 50" Plasma Monitor.  I want to use Media Center to use my video card tuner to watch tv along with the avi files on my new toy.

If you're running Media Scheduler, try shutting it down.  I had a similar problem after I had recorded using Media Scheduler.

If not, try deleting the registry key for TV so MC asks for configuration info again.  Try a search for details.

dobon, this is very weird. I see them correctly on one system and not on another system. They are actually only variations of the same system, with exactly the same files (the second system is the MediaSUV which is based around my MP3 backup harddisk). But there is one difference: On the MediaSUV (which does not show them correctly) I did a full removal and re-installation of MC, while on my HTPC/Media Server I have done upgrades since November (skipping a few builds). So this might actually be the source. I tried to re-import the files on the MediaSUV computer, but that did not change anything. Maybe I should install an older version (I have at least 10 betas laying around here) and upgrade to 140?

As for the new Media Server replacing WebRemote it works perfectly! I have tried during the day to crash it or make it do anything fishy, but could not get even a small hallibut! The only small annoyance is that Playing now isn't redrawn when you do something from NetRemote or another client. As for the multiple instances I'm sure that will come sooner or later, right?  ;D

Jim, thanks for your suggestion.  I tried shutting down Media Scheduler -- no difference.  Media Center completely shuts down after I hit OK on the message "Failed to play TV" so next I found info on deleting the registry keys.  I completely removed TV SETTINGS via HKEY CURRENT USER/SOFTWARE/J.RIVER/MEDIA JUKEBOX/TV SETTINGS.  When I restarted Media Center I did have to reconfigure the TV and the interesting thing is...when I correctly set the connection to audio card I could hear the tv channel I was on!  As soon as I double clicked a channel though...got same sequence...starting TV...then "Failed to play TV" and poof....Media Center gone!

No problems with exotic characters since unicode. I removed MC a few days ago and made a clean install of v.139. Stilll works.

'Å' at the end of the alphabet where it belongs. I'm impressed. :)

I thought I had fixed it, but I just changed my view schemes (they go back to default when clearing the library). Here's how you get the problem: Add a view scheme with Artist (or album artist, it does not matter), grouped (I use 1 letter/sign per group here since I have a lot of artists) any or no second criteria. I think you will find that under the groups you have something called "Other", where everything that does not start with 0-9 or A-Z is placed. Or am I wrong?

So it seems that it is the grouping that does not take exotic characters.

Try reading the existing TV threads and posting there.  Yaboing may be able to help.  It sounds like a configuration problem.

When a CD is not found in YADB and the dialog pops up to enter the data:

1) When there are Various Artists and the checkbox is ticked to enter individual artists a Submit gives an error when any one of the top 4 fields are blank - It should not give an error if the Artist is blank.   Plus, the individual Genre and Year field columns below should be able to editted like multiple fields in Media Library, ie select multiple, right-click to edit multiple, etc, AND/OR if the upper Genre, Year fields are filled in then they should autopopulate the Genre, Year columns below (unless they are filled in manuall which would mean they need to be unique).

2) When the dialog is still being displayed and a browser is opened (ie, to bring up Interact) on top of it the dialog and Media Library window can't be seen when switching to them (they just display what is in the browser that was on top of them).  Actually it looks like when the dialog gets hidden behind other windows the MC main window get corrupt and you have to minimize it to get to the dialog window.

If I start CD Labeler when Media Center First loads (without selecting any files) MC goes goes to 100% cpu usage.  Is it trying to build a label for all the files or is it in a loop?

Works fine when I do it right.  (just that I don't do it right all the time).

a side note: in YABBC  it says View the 10 most recent posts of this forum.  it should say 20 (and yes 20 is 2 times better than 10)

Skinning problem:

When I for instance want to close MC and places the mouse marker at the "X" in the upper right of the screen, the upper line changes from the actual skin to the look MC has when unskinned. I can't close MC because it doesnt react to the click on the "unskinned" "X". Only if I manage to hit a small part of the visible skinned "X" I can close MC.

If I disable skins, there is no problem.

Hope I made myself clear...?

When renaming TV stations, then using Media scheduler to record a TV show from that station you renamed, it records from a different station.
The only way all stations are correct is if you don't rename anything and leave it like Channel 1, Channel 2  etc.
(try with renaming different stations, then record a show from a station you didn't select previously, it will record from the channel that you've last previewed, except when you take a NON renamed one)

When running in FUllscreen (or hairstyle) on my TV out (on my PC monitor it works) and then starting Timeshifting (CTRL P), MC crashes.

If doing this on my PC monitor, all fine, only when displaying via my TV Out (as extended desktop), it crashes

I can't reproduce this (anyone else?). Can you give me all your settings from the "recorder settings" page? Also the encoder settings you are using. Is there any problem in the "file naming and location" settings? Can you rip CD tracks ok?

Thanks!

6) Setting dbl click behavior to "Add to Playing Now (play next)" does not behave the same way as selecting a file, right clicking, then selecting Play>Add (as next to play). Currently when your in Media Library and dbl click on a file, not only is that file added but so is every track below it.

Update (B140)...both methods function correctly (and are synchronized) IF there are some tracks already in PN and one of them is playing. However if MC is stopped or PN is empty, it will take the ENTIRE Media Library list (or whatever list your viewing) and inserts it into PN, then starts at the track you either dbl clicked on or sent via Play>Add(as next to play)

Bug:
1. If the column Display name for the Track # field is anything else than "Track #" (like "T#"), MC does not output 2-digit track #s if used in a template (like for Renaming from File Properties)...MC outputs 0 to 9 instead of 00 to 09.  To replicate, just rename the Track # column heading in Options > Tree & View Settings, remove & add the column heading (to refresh MC) and attempt a rename from file properties using [T#] in the template (instead of the stock [Track #] reference).

Pasting cover art from the clipboard no longer seems to be working...MC shows a link to the file but the image cannot be seen and it does not appear to store inside the files

UPDATE:  It appears that the link to the cover art directory had lost its trailing / which was messing up the recognition...  I added it back in and all worked fine... not sure if this is a real bug or not but I swear I never changed it myself...  Also is the enw ordering in Options here to stay or has it beeen changed accidentally only it doesn't seem to make as much sense now...

Still having the same problem with Media Scheduler...

I can schedule recurring events for a duration of 9 minutes or less, but anything longer crashes the Scheduler.   I get the impression this may be a configuration issue, but I'm not sure.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
