upgrade win 7?
« on: February 22, 2022, 10:16:01 am »

I have an ancient Media Center 18 running on Windows 7.  I would like to upgrade it.  Will JRiver 28 run on Windows 7?  Thank you.  -Howard

Gosh, lots of Windows 7 posts today. I'd recommend referring to my post here: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,132182.0.html

TL;DR: Windows 7 is a dead OS that shouldn't be used anymore as it's a major security risk doing so. If you can upgrade to Windows 10 (as far as I know, Windows 10 upgrades from Windows 7 are still free) you should. Finally, you shouldn't expect software developers in general to keep supporting a dead OS like Windows 7 - lots of software vendors have already long dropped support for Windows 7.

Gee, I don't think that I asked about the whether or not I should be using Win 7...  I think that I asked if anyone knew if Media Center 28 would run on Win 7.  Does anyone know the answer to that question?  -Howard

I'm guessing that JRiver people most probably doesn't test MC anymore with Win7 as it is dead OS now so who knows. It has a free trial so you why don't you just test it yourself to see if it works for you.

I have a MacBook from 2009 running Windows 7 32 bit via Bootcamp.
I have JRiver MC28 installed on it.  It seems to work fine as a client.  The server is a Zen 2 Ryzen 5 setup running Windows 10.

I am able to listen to streamed audio, watch live TV, and watch prerecorded shows (set to be converted to MPEG-2-TS 480p in Media Network->Client Options->Video Conversion” in Options).

Problems:  Sometimes there is an error message “Media Center 28 is running, but there may be a problem,” but then it opens OK anyway.

This is now a rarely used computer, and there may be more problems than I have yet experienced.  Also, I have not tested its use as a server.
