Slow CD Ripping
« on: February 24, 2022, 12:19:53 pm »

My CD ripping speeds with Media Center 27 are painfully slow and afraid 28 will be the same.  It has been this way even going back several versions of Media Center.  I had a 2015 macbook pro, same issue and now have a brand new Macbook Pro with latest updates and a brand new Pioneer Blu-Ray/CD Player Ripper and same thing.  If I rip with Apple Music app into an ALAC file, it takes about 5-7 minutes to rip and entire CD but with Media Center it takes 20 minutes or more to rip to a FLAC file.  I have paid to upgrade media center many times hoping it would fix my problem and still only ripping at 1.5x to 2x instead of 24x which the drive is capable of.  Does anyone know how to speed things up?

If you're using secure ripping, it can be a slow process, especially if the disc is scratched and it has to read multiple times at a low speed.

I've tried both Normal and Secure mode and rips at the same speed on both.  Discs are brand new in perfect condition. The rip report reports that there were no retries on the 2nd to last disc I ripped, but still took forever.  The last disc I ripped said it had a bunch of retries because of unreliable data but again, the disc is brand new and not a scratch on it?

Discs can be really strange.  Sometimes I get discs that rip at 20x and sometimes 4x and both look pristine to the naked eye.

You said you had tried Apple Music, but I don't consider their ripping algorithm to be "good".  A better test would be another program that has known excellent ripping behavior like XLD.  You might try that, just to see if the speeds from XLD are similar to MC, or if they are faster or slower.  Make sure to select "XLD Secure Ripper" in the options.  It's not the same as JRiver's ripping process, but it's much more similar than something like Apple Music.

Good luck!
Brian.
