I just noticed that the Mute button on my remote control still works when volume mode is set to disabled.
Took me a while to figure out that my kid had accidentally pressed the mute button.
We control volume through the AVR so I have volume mode set to disabled in media center.

To prevent this from happening again I deleted the Mute command under remote control settings, and the mute button no longer works!

Maybe you can disable muting along with volume control.
