Hi gang,

I've gone deaf in my left year, Sudden Deafness Syndrum, so I'm trying to figure out how to play my musice files in mono. I can't seem to find anywhere in MC or Windows to do this. It seems it should be a simple thing to do. Any suggestions?

if you want to mix to mono then there is only 1 channel so only one speaker will play anything

what exactly are you trying to achieve?

I’m trying to have a mono mix in both channels, using headphones. With headphones I can hear a little bit in my deaf ear, enough to give it “air “ and sound pleasurable, however I don’t get enough hearing for that to be effective and fulfilling, as most of the music is just not heard. So I want to try a mono setup that plays the same mono mix in both channels.

I think you can try the following

output format: mono
extra channels: 1
jrss mixing

then enable PEQ and add a single mix filter which copies L to R

this will give you 2 channel output with jrss mixing to mono and then a clone of that channel on the other output channel

So Matt, one more thing. How can I boost the volume in the left channel only while in the mono configuration?

You can't if using JRSS so you would have to switch to doing the mixing manually with a volume adjustment on the L channel first

This is simple if your source is all stereo, more involved if you have multi channel as well. Is it stereo only?

It is stereo only.

This problem might be solved by hardware in a more elegant way.

Something like the Mackie Mix5 and a couple of Y adapters.  Y the output of your DAC from 2 channel to 1 wire (L + R).  Then another Y so you get L + R on two wires.  Then into the Mackie mixer.  The Mackie has a balance control on the 2/3 and 4/5 inputs so you can precisely adjust how much left vs right volume you get.

It's got a very strong headphone output as well, with its own twist volume control for precise volume control to the headphones.  Many other small mixers would work this way also.

A trip to Guitar Center or your local music/guitar/pro audio shop might completely set you up for under $100.

Don't get me wrong, MC can do what you want.  But the hardware is easier to understand and much easier to adjust in real time, very precisely to exactly what you want.

If he's already copied L to R, can't he adjust the volume of L after the copy?

The L in this case is a mono mixdown which he wanted cloned to the other channel

Thanks all. I went deaf in my left ear a few months ago, sudden deafness syndrome, and am trying to figure out a way to listen to my Audeze LCD-5 headphones in a way to enjoy them again as when I had hearing in both ears. I’m getting closer thanks to your help. I do have some vestibule hearing that can give me the space and air for mono to work. I have a hearing aid that I use on the left with my headphones, which gives me a hint that something a little more nuanced and variable would work better than the hearing aid, which really only addresses to 7 or 8k. I’d like to handle it all thru j River rather than more gear. But, GL the y adapters sound pretty straightforward.
