Author Topic: Dumb question: What is "Build Thumbnails" in "Configure auto-import" settings?  (Read 377 times)

ALL of my local files have been tagged with proper images (one image shared by all files in a single album or folder). Is the Build Thumbnails function only for files that have no embedded cover art? If I check the box to build thumbnails in auto-import, will it mess with the image tags within the actual files? Or is this only for displaying album art in JRiver, so that the thumbnails are stored in MC31 library backup but not in the files themselves?

My question is prompted by something I noticed a while back, when I play a recently imported album for the first time in JRiver, those little cover art thumbnail images that show up in the top of the player next to the file info (if I've opted to show artwork in the display) are missing when the file plays for the first time. After a file has been played once, they always show up. So is this what the Build Thumbnails function is about? So that when a folder is imported it will automatically build those little thumbnails, rather than building them at the time of first playback?

Yes to most of your questions, they are used internally by MC so it can load album art more quickly. You can also trigger it to run on your existing library using "Build Missing Thumbnails" (use the search box in the options window to find it).

Search JRiver Wiki for "Thumbnails" (also the first Google hit):
