Recording from Line-in
« on: February 17, 2003, 03:19:42 pm »

Hi,

i'm failing miserably trying to get line-in recording to work. i'm plugging the line-out from my stereo to the line-in into a dell inspiron and the stereo output comes out of the laptop speakers so i know its working. but when i try to auto set the recording volume (with recording source set to line-in) it keeps reporting that no sound was detected. i've searched the interact and tried the advice but still no joy. is there anyone who can point me in the right direction. MC+9.0.105

Thanks, JJ

There is a section on Line in Recording under Help above.

The problem may be in the input you have selected.  It isn't always logical -- just try some others.

Check your output source. I'm using the tape out jacks on my receiver. That's how old it is. Dual RCAs-to-1/8" Y connector. Plugs into the audio in.

Doubleclick on the Volume icon in the Windows task bar, then Options, then Properties. Select Recording and then Line in.
Let me know the result.

The panel that Luigi1943 is referring to is where you want to be. What you see there can depend on what soundcard/driver combo you have.

My Sonic Fury card has "line In", while my SB has "Analogue Mix".
If yours is neither, give 'em all a try, one of them will work, and if not, give us all a shout back.

Thanks for all your advice. In fact i did have it setup right. i tried recording and it worked. it was just the auto level set that wasn't working.

Dose anyone know if this is it supposed to work when you're recording from line-in or is it only for mic input?

Thanks again, JJ

The auto level thingy is set using a sample of the "to be recorded" sound. So, you start playing the sound, preferably a loud selection, and then click the auto set button. After a short while the job will be done and the recording level will be set to what MC reckons to be the optimal level for the sound. In my experience though, MC was setting it a tad on the low side, so I always upped it a couple of percent. Experiment a bit with it to find levels you're happy with.

If you already had the sound playing, and you could hear it, and the auto set function was reporting "no sound" then you have a problem that's waaay out of my depth.
