Video and audio services available in MC
« on: October 30, 2023, 02:18:01 pm »

I am sorry to start this as a new thread, but I don't know where else to post my concern, even after a somewhat thorough Google search:

1. Could you please post an update to the list of services accessible through MC? Specifically, I am particularly interested in video services that can be accessed much like the apps in a ROKU box - Hulu, Prime, Disney+, AppleTV, Paramount+, etc., etc., etc.
2. Can they be accessed with account information just like ROKU, ATV4K, etc. so that we can view content that we are subscribed to be able to watch?
3. Are the videos processed through MC just like any other video? That is, can I process the audio through JR's audio DSP? Can I process video through JRVR/madVR?
4. Are there any plans to expand these capabilities?

I would love to have a list of audio services accessible as well, and it would be good to be able to find such a list in the same place as the video services list, maybe a pinned thread? And keep the list updated, including status on services that are in the works, being considered, etc.

I know that all of this stuff sounds easy to us non-techy types like me, but I really can't imagine that it could be all that tough either, as we can buy ROKU devices for $30 that contain apps for literally hundreds of services. The problem with all of these devices is that we cannot have them processed and integrated into a single product anywhere near as good as MC, and the ability to do so would probably be a huge step forward for JRiver sales and represent a very sizeable increase in customers.

I love MC and I would like to use it exclusively in my theater, but right now I still keep a couple of different video streamers in my system because there is no integration with MC and none of the other streamers can display the fine video quality that I get with JRVR. I know that Hulu and Netflix are supported right now, but I haven't explored them yet because the list is too small and can't replace a dedicated streamer (but I plan to check them out after posting this).

Anyone else interested?
Is this possible , probable, or just a pipe dream?

1.  Netflix and Amazon Prime.  Both have to be added in Theater View options.
2.  Yes
3.  Yes on audio, if you're using our WDM driver.  No on video.  It uses the Edge browser.
4.  We'd love to add more, but it's often impossible.

In general, audio services are more open (no DRM) than video.

Our Cloudplay service is the highest quality available.  No DRM so we can use our audio engine without restriction.

You can use Amazon Music in Theater View.  You need to add it in options.

It's not a pipe dream.  We're with you, but the industry has its own rules.

Yeah, as I researched more, I discovered the fact that the video services are presented using the Edge browser, and as such I assume that they are down-rezzed. I was hoping that separate apps might be written that would work like the apps in the dedicated devices, but I am taking a guess here that the problem has to do with the lack of security (for them) within a Windows environment, or at least that is the industry's perception. In fact, their content is not secure in those dedicated boxes, as anyone with a capture card and a little knowledge can break the security as things stand now. Integration with JRVR might actually be more secure than the boxes are presently.

Thanks for the quick and informative answers to my questions, Jim! I will definitely start using Cloudplay right away.

It's not really 'allowed' with WideVine IIRC
If you're doing WideVine L1 (or PlayReady) on a PC legitimately, there's a bunch of restrictions, hence the use of Edge.
