I'd appreciate any help you guys have to offer.

I'm trying to record some tapes onto the computer to then compress them to mp3 so I can save them on my computer.

I bought a connector from the Lineout on my stereo and plugged it into the Mic in on the computer and pressed record on CoolEdit Pro and play on the tape player.

It recorded it but it's really echoey sounding.
It's on a laptop which I dont think has a digital in so I was wondering, whats the best possible way to record the tapes?

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

You might try MJ or MC.  Take a look at Line in Recording under Help above.  

In Windows Audio controls, there is a tricky thing about setup.  It has setup for playback and setup for recording and you have to switch it back and forth.  It's under File/Properties.

Check the levels carefully.  Mic has two different possible levels.

right ,you can get good results with MJ/MC.
In fact the real pain in the .. is to set the volume.
But it is the same with any program.

btw, "echoy" means you have a loop in your chain somewhere, ie. the input is feeding the output is feeding the input is feeding the output...OR, upon playback after recording the output is feeding the input is feeding the output...not loud enough to feedback upon arming a track for record, but enough to cause the echo.

If the only input socket available is mic in, you need to keep the volume of the input signal very low. If you've got a line in socket then use that instead, you'll get much better results.

I'll "echo" JollyJim's comment about using a microphone input. It's best suited for recording from a microphone, since it boosts the mic's low signal level and causes distortion on other types of input devices. If that's all you have, make sure you go into the windows mixer recording properties and look for an advanced button that lets you turn off the "boost" feature. Also, check out the "line-in recording" link under the Help menu at the top of this web page.
Use MJ's (or MC's) "auto volume" feature to set a good volume level for recording. Unless you choose the "mixer" source in MC, you won't need to fiddle with the windows mixer controls (except to turn off mic boost as mentioned above).
