OT - Where do you...
« on: February 08, 2003, 09:29:57 am »

Get your music from most of the time? I had to stop at a couple of the local pawn shops this morning and pick through the selection. And it occured to me that many might do the same thing.

The one shop is new to me so I just browsed. The other has a deal that is hard to pass up. Seven cds for $25.00. I make a stop at least once a month and see what the current crop of used discs' are. It is funny what you can find.

Todays Picks:

Steely Dan
Motorhead
Smashmouth
Better Than Ezra
Flaming Lips
L7
3 Doors Down

All appear to be in mint or VG+ condition. And the price is tough to argue with.  ;D

Anyone got a better deal?

most of my metal cds at  $ 1.03 . Most of them still  sealed.
Not only metal ,other kinds of music as well

Many at $2.06.
What i do not like ,i sell it around me at $3.

And from time to time i give full cartons to other shops who give me around $2 each - not in money in exchange-
Other times ,i do a deal with a shop: at $1.03 the cd ,i take all of them- means 100,150 cds- and give you cash.
They say ok . And i start again the process like i said .

If i see someone in the street with records going to the shop,i stop him.
I have a look at the records and give him a price, telling him to go to the shop and see how much he would get.

Most of the time ,he is back to me with the bag for me ....

More or less ,all the cheap records do not cost me a cent.

This is good news.
The bad news is that it does not work like it with not cheap ones.......

I would say that the majority of my CDs and vinyl, maybe around 75%, was purchased at shops that sell used.  I have a little over 2000 CDs, maybe 500-600 CD singles, around 2000 LPs and around 800 12" singles.  Oh, and about 100 45s.

Currently I have two favorite stores here in Hollywood.  Eastside Records is a small shop that sells used CDs for $5.99. Sometimes, more popular artists are $7.99. It doesn't have a huge selection and I don't really go in there looking for specific titles, but they do let you listen before you buy and I almost always come away with something I didn't know I was looking for.

Amoeba Records is a huge store that opened here about a year ago that sells both new and used, as well as vinyl and DVD. I think I read in the newspaper that it is the biggest record store in the western US. They have over a million items in stock. I can pretty much find used copies of anything that I'm looking for here, and once in awhile I actually buy something new. The down side is that they sell used discs for about $9.99.  :(  They have listening stations setup that use MP3s and Winamp, so you can only listen to one of the hundreds of albums that they've decided to put on the stations. They also have lots of in-store performances and DJ sets on Friday nights.

Between shopping at these two stores, I haven't been in a Tower Records or Virgin Megastore in about two years.  :)

Here the UK a lot of our public librarys lend out CDs at about 75p for two weeks. The only drawback is that a CD has to have been released for three months before the library can lend it out but it's a great way to check stuff you may not usually listen to or buy. If I find something I like I rip it although according to the lending terms thats a no no. My way of looking at it is that although not totally ethical I've paid the lending fee and it's for my own personal use so I don't see a lot of difference to borrowing a CD from a friend.

Where I live in the UK we have a great store called Fopp.  They don't sell used CDs (one thing I really liked when I went to the states) but they sell new cds at really good prices.  Most brand new albums cost about £10 (compared to about £14 in Virgin or HMV) and older CDs are often £5.  Like somebody said above I quite often come out with something I did not expect to buy...

Camden Market here in London is fantastic for specialist shops which sell mint or vg 2nd hand cds which wouldnt be found in even the big HMV's or Virgin's on Oxford Street or Amazon. If you come to London, be sure to spend at leats an afternoon in Camden market, although i advise you don't go alone or wander in the streets where there anrent any shops or stalls.... :o

when you leave the tube ,the first street on the left ,where there is stalls selling fruits and vegetables ,you have 3 shops.
After that on the main street on the left you have 2 more.
On the right you have many in basements, but not that much stuff.
If you are there a week-end on the square where they sell clothes there is few. But not worth the mess.
Along the canal you have few ,many with live boot.
In the market itself you may find really good stuff.
In the main street there is a place 'Electric something ' where every second saturday there is a records fair.
On Week-End it is REALLY a pain in the ... to be there.
The shops in the street are open all the week ,and it is there than you may find the more if you have a want list .
cds and lps .
Before going home dirty and exausted ,you may have a look to Virgin and Tower ,many times ,they have real bargains.

My 'tourist tour of London ' is about 56 shops.....Some outside London ,like the marveillous Benos and the ones north east of London.
Keep in mind that most of the people working in this shops are just f.. bastards ,if they are really impolite with you ,just insult them.
