Why upgrade from MC 28?
« on: June 05, 2024, 11:43:52 pm »

My MC 28 supposedly no longer has access to the server.  The SQ seems fine and I wonder what difference access to the server makes since the email I received about not having access was confusing.  I don't know how server access affects SQ if at all, and often in the past I ran my dedicated PC without connection to the internet.  Any thoughts on why to upgrade?

My understanding is that as long as you don't ever need to add new music, movies, or tv files to your library, or try to look up new/better metadata (the tags like album artist, album, song title, etc.), MC28 will run as usual and sound the same as it always did. Any new files or requests for updates to them would not have access to the servers so you'd have to manually enter all the metadata. My understanding is that access to any online/streaming music like Cloudplay would be similarly unaccessible if the "connection" to it was on JRiver servers. For me, these functionalities could justify the upgrade even if the myriad fixed/new functionalities added since MC28 don't apply to your use case.

I don't care about album art and don't watch videos when listening to music and don't use any streaming service through jriver in my music room.  The last time I updated jriver was a huge hassle because I had to manually transfer all my vst3 plugins.  If jriver MC 32 will transfer these vst3 files for me I will upgrade, but album art is not a issue.  Do you know if an upgrade would automatically transfer the vst3 files I use for DSP from 28 to 32?  I have a feeling that jriver will be doing this required upgrade every 4 years or so the automatic transfer of settings, playlists and vst would be helpful if they want customers to upgrade often.  By the way, how could not upgrading affect playback of video files.  I play back video files on another PC on my tv using jriver with 28 through video out and dac connection by toslink with no problems.  How could lack of connection to their server affect its playback?  It does not seem to.  No other video playback app that can be downloaded and used for free is connected to a server. You thoughts are appreciated.

Sorry to be unclear but what I was trying to convey was that playback itself of any file format would not be changed by lack of connectivity to servers and nor any information about the files (metadata) already in your library. The lack of server access would prevent any automated searching for or downloading of any NEW information about new files being added to your library so you would have to manually enter any such information for each new file. Since my library grows weekly or monthly, this is a reason for me to upgrade in addition to the many improvements since MC28.

I don't use VSTs at all so I can't speak to them but I had no issues upgrading from MC31 to MC32 by doing a library backup with settings in MC31 then restoring that library backup with settings in MC32. You can read more at https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,137882.0.html

You could download and install MC32 as a trial to see if the import/upgrade works to your satisfaction or how much work you would have to do to customize it then decide whether or not you want to keep using/buy  MC32 or not.
