JRemote2 scrolling and stuttering/choppy audio
« on: August 04, 2024, 10:18:02 am »

Whenever I scroll through JRemote2 (albums, artists, etc) while audio is playing, the audio becomes choppy/stutters. Audio is playing on the computer, not through the android. It always happens when scrolling fast, and it happens occasionally when scrolling slow. All I can guess is that it's from all the thumbnails loading? Is there a fix for this? I do not notice the same behavior when scrolling within MC on the desktop.

What is the specs of the computer MC31 is running on? Try running MC's benchmark on it and post the score here.

I'm running an MC server on Win11 Intel i5 NUC.  Its MC benchmarks are about 3-5 times worse than yours (i.e. take longer) yet I do not encounter your choppy playback issue.  I can very rapidly scroll repeatedly back and forth through JRemote2 thumbnails on an old Samsung Galaxy S9 Android phone with no audible effect on server.

Playback at 44.1 kHz 16bit 2-channel stereo to USB DAC.  Typical jpg and png image sizes vary from 30 - 300 kB, a few as large as 1 MB.

JRemote2 settings:  Theme = dark | View mode = Thumbnails |Thumbnail Size = Medium.
Android Power Mode:  Optimized.

Maybe it's the number of thumbnails?  I currently have only about 765 albums in the MC library, 225GB, all artwork stored inside the audio files (mainly FLAC).

OK, yeah looks like it's all the covers loading. The library is 2TB, 6,206 albums. Not surprisingly, playing an mp3 results in less choppy noise, but when playing DSD or 24-bit it gets pretty bad. Looking at the windows resource monitor, whenever I scroll on JRemote the network Send for JRiver increases fairly rapidly. So I guess sending all those thumbnails causes the noise.

That's odd, because my library has twice as many albums (all FLAC) and I never see resource usage that large. Do you have any features on like memory playback or anything of the sort? Very strange issue indeed.

No memory playback, nothing selected in DSP studio. Just running USB Audio [ASIO] to a Topping DX7 pro. Would any of these settings matter below?

Topping DX7 pro product page:

Obviously, there is a bottleneck somewhere.  I would test only FLAC if you can.

The machine is very capable, not a problem there.

Whenever, Disk I/O is challenged, I always think about antivirus software.

You can build all thumbnails in MC all at once.  It's in options.

ASIO driver.  Can you try something else?
