Using WDM in exclusive mode possible?
« on: December 05, 2024, 07:34:41 am »

I use JRiver’s  WDM input driver to stream Tidal, Youtube etc. It works fine. No clicks, no dropouts.
When I use the WDM driver in exclusive mode (needed to make use of Tidal high res audio) and the output device is my UR22 (ASIO device)  it works well at all sampling rates up to 192Hz.
When I use my high end Stereo DAC (Windows Direct Sound) it works at 48kHz but I get extreme distortions at all other sampling rates. (Changing of any Buffer value has no effect)
Playing hig res from hard disk does not have any problems with the Stereo DAC.
Does anyone knows if Windows is written in a way that I can use the WDM virtual driver in exclusive mode and route audio at the same time to another windows output device (WASAPI, Direct Sound) in a safe way?

Thanks for any help

It's a known issue that currently doesn't have any workaround unfortunately.

When I tried the WDM driver with Tidal in exclusive mode everything except 192 kHz worked fine. At 192 kHz it became a stuttering, unlistenable mess. I would actually recommend at the moment to not use the WDM driver with Tidal if 192 kHz playback is important.

I recently set up a customer who is using Roon with the WDM so that he can use MC's visualisations. Glad to say that with WDM in WASAPI exclusive mode in Roon, there is no issue with either Tidal or Qobuz playback of 192 KHz. The audio device is also in WASAPI exclusive mode in MC.

It may be something about the way Tidal does exclusive mode? Roon seems to do it fine with MC's WDM
