Hairstyle and TV Out Problems
« on: November 24, 2002, 12:51:20 pm »

MJ9 seems like it has awesome potential!  Windows XP MCE seems like just another ploy by MS to monopolize the desktop.  But there's nothing else on the market that's even close (until now!).  Showshifter is the closest, but the interface is terrible.  It's great to see someone put out an excellent alternative.

Two problems/questions/points:

1 - Hairstyle is great!  But is there a way to hide the menus (and recover them when you want)?  I mean, who wants to watch a video that is that much smaller because of the "hairstyle"?

2 - Has anyone had trouble with ATI's 8500 DV AIW and TV Out?  I notice that almost (but not all!) all of the time, only the video gets output to the TV.  This means that even when using MJ in fullscreen, the top and bottom control bars aren't visible on the TV.  Same goes for the hairstyle - it's on the monitor, but not on the TV.  Every now and again, it'll properly output, but this happens maybe 1 in 20 times with no discernible pattern.  I've got the TV set to secondary (so that I can use the computer while the family is looking at videos) and "theater mode" set.  Any ideas?

Thanks for any "light".

Welcome to Interact and thanks for the encouragement.

Did you find the full screen mode?  Not Hairstyle.  In the settings, you can tell MJ to "jump to fullscreen if display exists".  Then from there, you can toggle between HS and FS with the menu button.

You can also get to FS from Playing Now by double clicking on the display.  Escape brings you back.

We're still tinkering with this, so stay tuned.

On the display problem, try a right click on the fullscreen display and set the display resolution in MJ.

As you probably know, TV's are usually best at 640x480 or 800x600.  I'm not sure that's the problem, but it's worth a try.

When you've had a chance to use it a while, let us know what you think.  This area is still changing a lot in MJ.

Thanks for the tips...

OK, so the "Tools|Options|General|Behavior"s "Jump on Play... Fullscreen (if has display) is used to automatically go to fullscreen when playing is started.  So that would help get to fullscreen when playing a video.

But I don't understand how to toggle between FS and HS.  What is the "menu" button?  If this allows to switch between the two at a click of a button (better yet, a shortcut, so that I can program my All-in-Wonder Remote!), that'd be perfect!

About the problem with the TV Out...  resolution doesn't seem to be the problem, as it's the same no matter 640x480, 800x600 (which seems to be the best) or even higher.  It seems like a problem with however the AIW knows what to send to the TV.  I don't pretend to understand the whole "overlay" issue - but I've noticed that some software seems to work better than others in this regard.

MJ9 is great.  I'll gladly buy this (and recommend to family and friends) once the bugs are worked out.

Thanks for the help!

What is the "menu" button?

On modern keyboards, there is a special menu button between the space bar and the right-hand ctrl key.

When you're in Full Screen mode, try hitting it.

Ahhh...  Great!  I never knew what that key was called.  It works as you've advertised.  Thanks.

For what it's worth, I've noticed that when switching from FS to HS, the vertical resolution on the TV gets smaller (it appears to stretch the horizontal to fill keep the same width) - as if it's readjusting the size to give space for the HS menus.  But alas, no joy.

I just wanted to let you know that, in part, because of your friendly and informative response to my questions, I've purchased the license for MJ9.  I usually "try until I'm certain it's perfect" before I buy software - which, admittedly, leads me to use a trial or cracked product for a few months and then give up because it's not exactly what I'm looking for.

Media Center fills a great niche!  I look forward to seeing the beta progress to a final release...

I'm still waiting for the girder plug-in to be upgraded to 9.0, and there are still overlay issues (but I'm thinking that might be an ATI problem), and I have major trouble with the TV Tuner freezing the OS (no BSOD, no errors, just a hard lock).

Keep up the great work!
