A bit early I know but for v10 could you PLEASE make it so it can run side by side with all previous versions.

This will be especially more useful as you start making Media Jukebox cover every feature under the sun which will make it consume a lot more memory.

I'll usually just want to be using a basic jukebox (v8) but might sometimes also have need for the full program and I'd hate to be forced to choose.

If you order fish and chips, what does it cost? How many MB of RAM can you get for the same bread?

Jim,
I know your point about how cheap RAM is but that's not the point. I'm ALWAYS doing a LOT of multitasking and so the RAM gets swallowed up fast. The last thing in the world I want is to have 50MB or more of it being swallowed up by MJ.

When I'm actually using MJ and browsing, organising my songs etc this is fine. But ALOT of the time I use it to choose the songs I want, put them in a playlist and then minimise it and forget about it while I work as it happily plays the songs in the background.

It's at this point when it's in the background I dont want the RAM being used. Sure I dont mind like 5MB or so being used which is all that's needed to play the song (I've seen players that can nicely play with this amount of RAM) but no more.

Currently MJ uses 17Mb when in mini me mode to play my songs. I just dont want to see this figure rising to more just to be playing my music.

The cool thing about 9 is that you can create your playlist, then Send it to Winamp, which consumes even less memory than MJ8.

Or you can minimize the mega screen to the system tray, stop visualizations, and run MJ 9 in about 7MB.

So how much RAM can you buy with an order of Fish and Chips?

OK, I'll wager a pint of England's best that you can get your ordinary fish and chips for five quid. That's around about 80MB of RAM, I reckon.

Gotta go for a jimmy, mate. At two quid a pop, I figure it set me back about 40MB.

The grammar was fine.
Only mistake in it was:

Taking a little mickey.
You dont take a little mickey, you take THE mickey'.

Not a bad attempt for a yank though.

And while RAM might be cheap, extra slots in a motherboard aren't once the standard ones are full.

And you trying running:

Photoshop, Imageready, Dreamweaver, Internet Explorer and Trillian all at the same time and see how fast your memory disappears

When your using programs like those first 3 you'll find the RAM going FAST and as a web developer I need and use them all together often.

The 'send to winamp' idea would probably would quite well though although I'll feel like a traitor and would rather just stick within MJ.

From the new FAQ page about license I learn that a MJ9 license works with MJ8... but there is no information if a MJ8 license works with MJ9, or I can't find it

As an addendum, although the license will work in both versions, it's not recommended to switch back to version 8 after using 9.

Version 8 will not understand the new tagging format that version 9 uses for custom fields, replay gain, and other extended fields.

Jim or Matt,

If i upgrade from V8 to V9 will I have to redo all of my Custom Tags, and redo Replay Gain??

I have 28,000 tracks so this could tag a long long time!

Jim on this link it says that you do not have to uninstall V8 to go to V9, however from reading various posts this does not appear to be correct. Please can you let me have a definitive answer?

Since MJ9 Is In Beta The Convert To MJ9 May Not Be Perfict.

I Tryed To Go From MJ8 To MJ9 4 Times And I Had To Uninstall MJ8 Due To The Data Base Conversion Was Not Perfected At That Time (And I Am not Sure If It Is Now).

Eather Way It Does Not Hurt Anything.

Nothing Will Blow Up.

Will i lose my Replay Gain info though? It took in excess of 11 days solid to run through!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hence the reason i am a little concerned!

Graham. Custom Tags survived witout any apparent damage both ways, that is switching to v9 and back to v8. I don't use replay gain, so I don't know about that.

Oh, and name it something other than the default so it doesn't get overwritten of you do a backup of the V9 database on the same day.

why?

If they are Mp3's that info is saved to the ID3v2 tags.

and they will need to be rescanned anyway to get the new BPS etc.....

How did I miss this? - at last something I do know about - fish and chips about £3.80 around my way. Jim - if youre buying Ill take a pint of Englands best - Timothy Taylors Landlord.

I am flying to Edinburgh tomorrow to help try and explain to the UK fishing industry that not only have they have fished cod in the North sea to biologically unsustainable levels, but they are going to be prevented from fishing in the NE Atlantic for deep sea species (orange roughy and chips, anyone?). Unfortunately, all this will mean that a lot of the fishing industry will be economically unsustainable as well. Any Canadians on here remeber the Grand Banks...?

All this and Im a vegetarian too

- at least Im not risking my life on the sea, though.

And now, back to our normal service...

Thanks for protecting the fish. It's incredible that we've gotten to this point with most of the world still not paying much attention to it, and with almost no discussion of the problem's relation to world population growth.

the replay gain was saved in MJ tags with MJ8 and in MJ9 they are saving the Replay gain Under Id3v2 Tags.

not sure if MJ9 will allow the import of and convert of the Old way i would think it would for sometime.
