Branding via id3 tags?
« on: November 19, 2002, 06:50:42 am »

I noticed some id3v2 tags in id3-tagit today, that I don't think I put there.  Did MJ put them there?

Well, I put the Genre there, but I typically strip comments.  And I dunno what "Tool Name" is.  Are these tags that MJ automatically puts in my files?  And if so, is this configurable at all?

MJ is now writing Standard ID3v2 Tags.

Eng = Englisg and is entered for the comment Tags or User Added Tags it could change due to the language.

I know there was a bug in MJ9 that entered MediaJukebox In The Comment Field. This Maybe entered if your running an older version of MJ9. it could also be entered if your running this as an un-registered version Of Media Jukebox (Pick One)

since MJ is adding more Standard tags you may see more tags than you were before.

Media Jukebox writes any "extra" fields to comment blocks in the ID3v2 tag.

This system is compatible with all major tagging systems, including WinXP and MusicMatch.

You can see a full tag dump in the "Format" page of file properties in MJ.

King, running it registered.  Could have happened in an older version (running most recent atm), but I've found the same tag in the comment field of 123 other files.  I leave the comment blank as a rule (it implies sharing, and that's naughty, ;)).

Matt, whatcha mean "extra" fields?  I'm not questioning compatibility at all, MJ's tags work great with everything I do.  I just was wondering if the "Media Jukebox" and "Media Jukebox:  Tool Name"  tags were written by MJ automatically.

I guess my concern is, does MJ edit the comment tag just by playing the music?

No, it shouldn't change the comment.  If it does, it's a bug.

If it's happening with the latest build, let us know.

(we do however store the tool name and version when/if we do save the tag, but it won't replace the comment)

I think that bug was fixed a build or two ago

Like Real Play Gain, Tool Name Too Version Peak Level etc... MJ now uses the COMM tag (A Standard ID3v2 Tag) to enter in all extended "Extra" Tags.

It's A Good Thing

Here is part of a tag.

ID3v2 Tag: (816 bytes)
 COMM (Tool Name): Media Jukebox
 COMM (Tool Version): 9.0.79
 COMM (Replay Gain): -11.27261
 COMM (Peak Level): 1.00000
TBPM (BPM (beats per minute)): 88

So for those more in the know about this stuff than I am, are MJ's tagging issues all resolved? For a while there I was wondering if MJ was making a huge mess of all my tags, what with all the changes being made and bugs and whatnot.

Is it safe to wipe all my tags and then let MJ update them from the library?

Doof, I just updated 12,000+ tags

and MJ changed them all from the orginal \ mj8 taging to a more compatable tagging system, and it worked fine.
