Concerning gapless output
« on: November 12, 2002, 08:19:07 am »

A friend of mine pointed me out to something I've been looking for for a long time: something that can play MP3's without gaps. Unfortunately, it's a Winamp output plugin. Basically, you have to enable fading for the start of a new track, set the length to 0 and enable "remove silence from end of tracks". Then you get gapless output.

I looked around the creator's site (www.blorp.com/~peter or something) and found the source code available on a slightly different plugin, but there is no SDK for writing output plugins for MJ, so I can't try to do an output plugin for MJ with ideas from this plugin...

Now, for the reason that led me to writing this: Media Jukebox is unfortunately unable to do this... I mean, for gapless-friendly formats like APE or OGG, gapless output works fine, but for other formats, like MP3 or WMA, there is always a small gap unless they are created with a special option, which is almost never the case.

I was hoping you could make something like it on MJ9... I have had a few ideas, like smooth crossfading with a very small duration, but the minimum MJ allows is 0.1s, which is clearly not enough. Maybe with a 0.01s duration it would do...

Then again, the problem may be in the silence at the beginning or end of the MP3 (something to do with starting or ending frames, someone once explained it to me), so maybe a "remove silence" option would be necessary...

But now that I know it's possible, I feel more confident to ask for it. I know the MJ9 schedule is very busy, but I would be glad simply if it found its way to the MJ9 final  :)
If you don't think you have the time / will / patience / whatever to do it, just let me know so I can stop bothering you with these requests  ;D

Thanks

Hey Sergio,

We're on it -- hopefully we'll have some solution soon.

More soon...

In the next build, if you turn on the "suppress silence" feature in Options -> Playback, it'll trim leading and trailing silence.

Also, the MP3 plugin should be a little better at being gapless.

You'll have to let us know if it does the trick.

It for sure makes cross-fading a bit cooler.

YES YES YES  :D

THANK YOU! It's a long time wish to have this in MJ... Thanks guys... Where else can you get such a prompt response?

That's why I love MJ and JRiver :)
Remind me to apply for a job there when I get out of college  ;D
