Date Imported, Useful?
« on: October 18, 2002, 05:52:10 pm »

Hi
i've been testing 2 or 3 beta versions and one of the reasons to change from the first one was that i read that Date Imported was added. I thougt that was great, 'cause it's something that i do manually with my music.
I think that for you take a better image of what i want to say i'll explain you my basic organization.
Basically i make 3 playlists groups:
Genres: that i try to keep rather basic (rock, reggae, hardcore, dance, rap, etc.)
Lp's Completes and Songs (Basically, you've done this right now, but as i've some uncompleted lp's that for me are complted i use this playlist too. But yours work rather OK)
And third and more important now
Novelties: Here i set playlists for year/month (news 2002-10, news 2002-09, news 2002-08, etc.).
When i import some music (almost all the days i've some new music) i mark the genre, if it's lp or song and what month i've imported(almost always downloaded). In this way i think that i've enough control to make some other playlists and smartlists.
Now as you've added date imported i must not use that novelty playlist 'cause i've a field with the date imported, but... i don't find any use to this way of display the date imported.
How can i controll what month i imported? Have i to calculate what day was 16 days ago?. Maybe this is not so hard, NOW!, but what will happen in a year when i want to listen songs that i imported 6 months ago?. I think that with this display i'll have to follow doin things in my way.
I'll show an example of smart list using novelties:
~t=180 playlist=genre (the one/s i want to chose), playlist= novelties 2002-10, novelties 2002-09 (to listen only the most recent stuff)
Try to do the same with Date imported!!!
~t=180 playlist=genre (the one/s i want to chose), date imported=

and right now, it's only imported beginning 16 days ago!!
Imagine that it was displayed year/month?

Can't you make the display for date, in fact i'll only need year and month (preferibly in this order 'cause make it easy to keep the sort order). As maybe some people want to know even the hour and minutes and seconds   ?, you could give us the possibility to choose with view we want: year/month, or year/month/day, or year/month/day/hh, or the one that it's now
There's other thing about this that i consider important:
i make view schemes with these playlists (so i can see the album view). Have you tried to make a view scheme with Date Imported?. No, better don't do it, you'll get a lot of dates (imagine in one year!). If you set the display in year/month looking through it it's rather easy.
Here i show you 2 captures, one with year/month view

and the other with the date imported view

What do you think?

Sorry if i can't explain well certain things, but english is not my language. Maybe this is the motive to so long post, i want to let clear what i want to say  :)

Good points, and thanks for the detailed post.

There's still work to be done in handling non-string data types both in search wizards and in tree view schemes.

Just hang with us and give some gentle reminders and we'll get it all nailed down with time.

Thanks again.

Maybe even a calendar select

option where you can select the Year, month in that year or even day of that month.

For all things to do with dates in MJ I think we should be able to specify the date format.
Save it as a unix timestamp then allow us to specify the format that it is displayed in:
ie:   d/m/y = 24/12/02
or   D d - M - Y = Monday 24 - December - 2002

etc etc where we can totally control how the date is displayed to us.

Yeah cause being in the UK and getting American dates drives me mad.  Its okay if it is an obvious one like 9/23 - September 23 but when it says something like 4/5 to me that says 4th of may and not April 5th!!

OK, we'll switch our date system if you'll start driving on the right side of the road.   ;)

How about a compromise??  Ill start driving on the right hand side of the road occasionally if UK dating can be implemented...  Sound fair? ;D

:) :)

It is a real problem as it is sometimes very difficult to know if you are viewing an english or american software/web site/... On the other side, it is very easy to know if you are driving in England or in the USA...

;)

For my digital pictures filenames I use yyyy-mm-dd as it is naturally sorted.

About the data display:
here in Spain we normally have the day/month/year display, but i noticed when we change from year 2001 to 2002 that if i sorted my novelties like 09/2001 - 10/2001, etc.. and later 01/2002, 02/2002, etc  the order will be displayed 01/2002/, 02//2002... 09/2001, 10/2002. and this is not very well sorted. So i checked different options and i find that year/month display worked well. 2001/09, 2001/10, ..., 2002/01, 2002/02, etc.
So i've to agree with Michel "For my digital pictures filenames I use yyyy-mm-dd as it is naturally sorted."
