Yikes, downloaded update no MJ crashes . ..
« on: September 26, 2002, 06:53:53 am »

Program opens okay but as soon as I try to open any file the system crashes.  Prior to this morning's update (I don't recall the number) all was well.

MJ crashes when some library files are selected others are fine.  About 1/3 of the files seem to crash it.

Try a reboot, reinstall.

Delete the jmd files in program files/jriver/mediajukebox/data.

Deleted Data files, reinstalled, rebooted, etc.
Same result.  Crash when certain files are selected from library.

What exactly did you download?  9.0 is about 10MB.

What types of files are you having trouble with?  WMA?  MP3?  Do you have the input plug-in for them installed?

There may be a problem with the WMA files.  Were any encoded with WMP 9.0?

MJ shouldn't crash even so, but it may not play them right now.

If you have a file that causes the problem, please e-mail it to me:  jimh @ jriver.com.

A little more experimentation shows:
When I open MJ in Media Library all is well.  If I click on an actual song in the content pane I can select and play any file.
The problem is when selecting a file or subfile from the organization tree pane.  That's when about 1/3 or so of the files cause MJ to crash.  For the life of me I can't find a common thread related to the crashing; old files/new files, this source, that source, etc.
Also to be clear regarding early info: I downloaded 9.0 a week or so ago and its been working find.  It was an update that popped up on my screen this morning that is the recent change.
Then after talking with you I removed the data files, reinstalled 9.0 etc.
Thanks for you help.

Have you installed anything new?

Windows Media Player 9?

no nothing new.  I did download WMP 9 a month or so ago (I was using MJ8 then).  It was a disaster and I had to use the XP restore function to get rid of WMP 9  to recover).

It wasn't an update that was listed in MJ's Check For Updates thing was it?

Because as far as I know, that's still reporting a build of 8 as being the latest update.

Did you download it from the thread in Interact?

The update was one of those automatic pop ups that came on first thing this morning.  I accepted the update without really paying too much attention since it was from MJ.
Later, on advice from Matt I reinstalled 9.0 from the 9.0 thread.

I noticed last night when installing MC and did a Update MC showed that the upgrade of MJ8 was new.

so if users are getting the update the system may crash since MJ8 is not compatable with MC's database.

Ken is seeing something that nobody else is reporting, so it could be OS instability or hardware.  Could be a bug in MJ that nobody else has reported, but the fact that it seems erratic suggests the other two.

The new WMP 9 or the new service packs may be related.  There is something mysterious going on out there.

Ken,
Double check that the folders and files aren't read-only.  Look at their properties in Windows Explorer.

If you can identify a file that always causes a problem, please send it to jriver @ jriver.com.

I learned this:
When doing a clean re-install of MJ9 everything works fine when MJ first opens as part of the install process.   However, if I close and reopen the program the problem is back.  I did a couple of re-installs and the problem is consistent and the crash behavior is consistent.

I removed 9 and reinstalled 8 and now everything works perfectly again.  I'll look forward to going back to 9 whenever this gets worked out.
Hope this info is helpful.

Hi Jim, you asked for a problem file but I'm not sure what to send you.  I could click on any WMA file from the content pane without problem.  It was clicking on certain file names from the organizational tree pane that caused instant shut down.  Most of those files contained several WMA files.
Let me know if I can provide anything.
