Get Tags from FileName
« on: September 20, 2002, 11:59:26 am »

Hiya,
Sometimes I want to tag tons of mp3's all with different naming formats. Could there be a smart naming format that we can select how it treats different sized file names.
Instead of just using a fixed naming format, we specify the format of the different lengths and then Media Jukebox determins which format has been used depending on the name of the file and then uses the appropriate structuring.

This would be really useful :)

It would?

I'm having a hard time understanding why you'd want to do that. Or in what context. Can you give some examples?

Because it kind of sounds more like a bloatware type of "feature" the way you're describing it.

Why can't you just sort the files by size in a Media View, then select each group you want and run the rule you want on that group, then move on to the next one?

Oh, are you saying based on the number of characters in the filename?

Because if you are... then I still don't get it. :P

I know what ur talking about.... Ive seen it  up close and personal .. and please done flame me for mentioning another product .. but Dr Tag has it ... You create naming schemes (like Artist - Title (track), Artist - Album - Title - Track, etc) .. and it finds the most appropriate one and applies it (of course, there has to be a LOT of other logic build in as well (for track numbers being out of place and whatnot) ... which is why I still use a separate tagging program ... there are too many different schemas for P2P files ...

For your own personal Library though, there is really no need for diff schemas, as you will be the one naming them to begin with, so you SHOULD be naming them according to how you would like them saved for MJ :) ... (in a perfect world, eh ?)

Ah, I see how that would work. That's actually a pretty good idea. It would be worthless to me right now because I've already fixed all of that stuff in my library. But it would have been really helpful back in the day. :)

Yeah, like a seperator is specified, usually it's -
The file name is then broken down at all the -'s. And then a specific rule applied depending on how many sections are created.
It could be further enhanced by being slightly smart. For instance each section could be tested to see if it is purely numeric and between 1 and 100. If it is and no others are then this is automatically assigned as the track number field.
Little things like that :)

Aaah, another idea related to this but the exact oposite in fact.

Smart - Rename file from properties option so that I could set a standard format: artist - album - track # - title
and it would then not just create this for every track found, but would instead check each track and if it was missing say an album name, instead of creating: artist - - track # - title, it would instead do: artist - track # - title and realise that there was no album name and so not include it :)
