New J River product idea
« on: October 27, 2003, 08:16:30 am »

Hi guys...

I have an idea for a new product that would be absolutely awesome.  I use my PC for DJing and was thinking it would be great to build a specific DJ PC using one of the new VIA Mini-ITX boards and fitting it all in a flight case with the screen embedded into the top of the case.  The main problem at the moment is that there isn't really any appropriate software.  I use MC for all my DJing but have no ability to control fades or beat matching.  The specific DJ software like PCDJ or MixMeister work well in those respects but their libraries are poor hence my idea for a new piece of software....

Utilising MCs excellent playing facilities and library have a piece of DJing software that incorporates more specific DJ features.  By this I mean two players for cueing tracks, Control over cross fade and the ability to manually crossfade, Beatmatching, control over pitch and tempo of playback, ability to intersperse samples etc.

If this would be possible it would be an excellent piece of software and considering the price of other PC DJ software I would imagine would sell by the bucketload as the main rivals flagship product costs over 200 pounds and isn't as good for DJing in a lot of respects as MC is now...

Any comments??

Adam

PS Keep up the good work on MC...it is already my software of choice for this aspect.  If and when I create the DJ PC I will let post pics here...

I am wondering if this could be a 'Front-end' for MC rather than a complete dedicated package?
Perhaps utilizing MC's Zone feature?

Front end would be fine for me...It could probably be written as a seperate program that hooked into MC using the outside automation functions.  The other feature I had thought of but forgot ot mention in the original post was the ability to have a video module too that control visualizations being sent out to an external monitor or projector...

If there are any coders out there who could do something like this as a front end that could hook into MCs database and use MCs playback functions while still having proper fade and beat matching I would be most grateful.   I would do this myslef if I had any modicum of programming skill but unfortuanetly beyond very basic visual basic, HTML, XML and CSS my coding skills peter out rather quickly!!  (Hell Ican't even understand the SDK :D)

The idea of using MC as a back-end sounds reasonable.

But MC is not very open to any other software that could use the info it contains.

No calculated fields ( BPM, etc) can be exported out of MC as far as i understand. In fact the whole library export to XML is a case in point.

The exported fields contain almost no info that was added to the tracks while they went through any analysis in MC cept for maybe standard ID3Vx tags.

Thats not strictly true ny...if you do a full library XML export you do get all the calculated fields info...its only when you do an mpl export you don't.  I was thinking something along the lines of Music lobby that is a front end accessing MCs database using the automation SDK...The more I think about the easier I think it might be...  I might talk to Nila...I guess it may be his kind of project...

Yeah, I saw that project on mini-itx.com, sweet looking rig. You may want to check out myHTPC, while it's not ready to do what you want yet, the creator is nearing publishing myHTPC2 which will do exactly what you want....
