visualization studio

I want to be able to make my own visualizations in the studio but im not able to edit the individual properties and when I try to remove a line item it tells me to select a component even after it's highlighted. i know with a previous version I was able to make these changes.  Now all I can do is insert something and can not alter it... please help!!! ?
