Questions about 2 systems sharing library and files.
« on: October 27, 2003, 09:01:19 pm »

I'm having trouble setting up two systems to use the same library AND mp3's while maintaining the ability to edit tags from either system.  In other words, I want sytem A to have all the mp3's and the library on it.  I want system B to reference system A, but I'd still like to be able to edit and tag my files from EITHER system.  I set up system B to look at system A's library by adding an entry in the Library Manager.  It worked as far as the library goes, but since the drives on system A use different letters than the "networked" letters that system B uses, the files aren't seen by system B -- i.e. system A points to the "C" drive for an mp3, but when system B looks at the "C" drive, it's looking at IT'S "C" drive, which is not where the file is.

I've read that what I'm attempting can be done, but I'm unclear how to do it from the posts that talk about it.  Also, it's been "implied" that you do NOT need the media server to this, which would be best for me since I don't need remote access.  I am able to share the files and the library by using the media server, but changes to tags don't "take" when using this method.

Isn't there a way to accomplish what I'm describing without using the media server?  Is using the same drive letter for the media drive on both the client and server the only way to accomplish this?  If so, is it safe to do this -- i.e. is it a problem having two systems write to the same library file, or does MC have the provisions to handle this situation?  Am I just asking for something that MC is not "really" capable of?

Thanks for any help with this,

Larry

As far as I know, in the current versions, it is NOT advisable to try and update the library from two locations at once, as the database engine has not been built this way (ie. no multiuser record lockig etc). From what I saw posted hereabouts, expect lots of bright flashes, sparks, "boing" noises, smoke, and molten oozing stuff coming out of your fan grilles if you try this.

I, too, would like to be able to update tags, etc from the client end of the connection to Media Server, but this is also currently not possible. The traffic Media Server -> Client is strictly one way at the moment.

I guess you COULD have both machines with their own libraries, with each accessing the MP3's by whatever drive letter. I don't know what would happen on the second one, if you update a pile of tags on the first one etc. I somehow think it would not work real well...

Bring on version 10 with "proper" two-way communication between Media Server and x number of clients connected. Yee-hah!
