Skin Manager-problems
« on: November 02, 2003, 04:48:42 am »

Sorry, no doubt the problem has been discussed already earlier, but regretfully I can't find the solution. Am having problems with downloading/installing my favourite skin. Each time after installing a new version  I find myself with a new skin that I don't like. Sofar I can switch to my favourite skin, but now it isn't there anymore.
Right now I have 'Blue Steel'/ 'Green eyes' / 'Pixos'.
I clicked on 'download more skins', selected Mega-ME on the website and
tried to download 2 skins.
The I get a window:
"Media Jukebox cannot load any suitable skins"
"Pls restart your computer and try again"  (which I did and which did not
work..
"If this does not remedy the problem, then install the latest version of Media Jukebox"
Media Jukebox??? Am working with MediaCenter...
Well, okay, I also tried that, but still no other skins to select.

Then I tried to use 'Browse'.
I have on HD close to 600 files (3.3mb) in flwg directories:
Green Eyes
PixOS
Z
Blue Steel
Z Lite
Tekno

but when 'browsing' I can only select .mjs, .zip, .wsz.

okay, I cud select from a number of .zip-files, like:
Slider Default Blue.zip
Slider Gold.zip
Slider Green.zip
Slider Red.zip

I get: Successfully installed new skin. Do you want to apply?
clicked on Yes

Then: loading of current mini-skin failed. Media Jukebox will automatically
revert to the default mini-skin (clicked on OK, no alternative)

Then: "Media Jukebox cannot load any suitable skins"
"Pls restart your computer and try again. "If this does not remedy the problem, then install the latest version of Media Jukebox"

Tried - retried - again tried - searched for a FAQ regarding possible
problems with skins.
Gave up after 2 hours.
Running MC 9.1.291

Anybody out there who can help??

Thanks

Not all skins will work with 9.1.  Visit the 3 party skins and plugins board for a good selection of new skins that will work with 9.1.

Mini skins *should* be OK.

For mega skins, they changed things, just a little bit ;),  in  9.1.

The place to look is 3rd party plugins board. I gathered some links together earlier in this thread....

Thanks!

Before updating from MC9.0 to 9.1xxx I remember to be working
with a skin named "Z" (??) or something like that.

As far as I know it was a relatively 'straight forward' skin, user friendly.
I liked that one. The track-info was in 3-4 blocks, that cud be clicked away.

One way or the other I can't get that one working anymore.

Does anybody out there have a solution??

Sounds like you got everything messed up in your skins folder.

Try uninstalling MC, delete the Megaskins and MiniSkins folder if they're still there, and then reinstall MC.

Once that's done, you should be able to download and use any mini-me skin. As for Megaskins, as far as I know the only ones that are current and will work with the latest build are the ones that come with it and a small handful of others that are available in the Third Party Skins and Plugins forum.

I know that Nightlife works, and the WMP skin I believe works, but as far as I know, the others are questionable. A lot of changes were made in MC's skinning routines and not all skins have been updated to work yet. If in doubt, ask in the thread about the skin in question if it works with the current version of MC.

And hopefully someday, JRiver will fix the website so that skins can be uploaded again.

Thanks. What Skins do _you_ have? Does 'Z' of 'Z-lite' work?

It sounds like there is something seriously wrong.

Try uninstalling it, Deleting any left over files, then reinstalling it.

All should be well after that

I did and it fixed the problem, though the 'old' skin, that I liked, I didnot
get back anymore. Have to stick to Pixos.
Well, anyway ... there are these Mini-ME-skins, I accidentally selected
on and had to find my way back to the normal-skin ... I wanted to delete
the mini-me-skins, but one, I cud not delete, because it was selected.
How to unselect it ...??

If you mean that you don't want any mini-me skins at all, then you won't be able to do that from Skin Manager. You'll have to navigate to the C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\MiniSkins folder and then manually delete all of the mini-me skin folders in there.

If you just mean that you only want to remove the ones that you're not using, then pick one that you want to keep, switch to it, then you can delete the other one.

Personally, I wouldn't bother unless you are extremely short on hard drive space. The average mini-me skin only takes up about 200k of space. And you're just going to get a bunch of them back when you install a new build.

Thank you - well then, I guess I leave it this way. I accidentally switched
one of these mini-ME skins (my -strictly personal taste- horrible  :)).
But I did know how to get back, only after clicking this and that I more or
less got back to the usual skin. So I figured: this must not happen again ..
Well anyway... tks

When you're in a mini-me skin, you can always very easily return to MEGA-ME by right clicking on the skin and choosing "Return to MEGA-ME". Of course a well designed skin will make it easy to find the button that does this as well. Whether through a well designed button, or tooltips.
