MC 9.1 ASIO Problems (Omni)
« on: November 10, 2003, 12:40:25 pm »

BUG:  ASIO playback on Audigy 2 hangs MC.

To update my previous bug report (posted in the previous 298 thread), it turns out the problem not specific to that particular APE sample file.

Three ASIO devices are listed:

    Creative ASIO
    SB Audigy 24/96 ASIO [6800]
    SB Audigy ASIO [6800]

I'm not sure if the "Creative ASIO" entry is a Windows XP "default" driver, or something added by Creative Labs, but it's what MC defaults to (since it's first in the list), and it hangs MC after displaying the following dialog box:

If I set MC to use "SB Audigy ASIO [6800]" instead, everything works fine.

I only post this now because most "new, inexperienced" users would probably leave it at its default setting ("Creative ASIO") and wonder why MC keeps crashing on them. ;)

(This is the last I'll mention it, Jim, so no need to berate me to start a new thread. :))

Next build will add a check box for ASIO diagnostics.

Please try it and let us know what's different between the different settings.  Then we'll go from there.

Thanks for helping!

This is just peachy.  Now I'm getting the same error even when using the "SB Audigy ASIO [6800]" device!

I've been playing tracks all afternoon, and then suddenly when I tried to add (and play) a new song, the above dialog box popped up.

Even after a reboot, I can't play anything using that device.

But get this:  Now the "Creative ASIO" works fine!!!

Since I haven't updated my audio drivers since 9/22/2003, I can't explain why MC is flip-flopping over which device it likes.

Okay, the failing device flip-flopped again.  :-\  Anyway, I know it's only a starting point, but the new diagnostic dialog box doesn't seem very informative.  Is there some log file generated somewhere that I'm not seeing?

For the (currently) working ASIO device:

For the ASIO device that causes the above error:

I think we found it.

Yep, apparently you did!  I can now use both devices without error.  Thanks!   ;D

Thanks for following up Omni.

It turned out to be a silly little thing where a number could get used before it was initialized to zero with some cards, causing sort of big problems.

Anyway, thanks again!
