MC Icon in explorer problem

Why do my MC icons default to this in Windows Explorer

Shouldn't they look like this

I keep having to change the icon shown in explorer from the small to large one - I have to do it at least once a day.  The icon always reverts back on install of a new MC build and sometimes reverts back even when I haven't installed a new build.

It's a small thing but it's bugging me.  Anyone know how to fix this?

Maybe your Windows Icon Cache is corrupt.

Try getting MS PowerToys for (insert your Windows Version here), and use the "Rebuild Icons" function in it.

MS Powertoys for all flavours of Windows is available all over the net as a free download...

See if that helps...

Aren't file icons usually different than the actual program icon? For example, look at MS Word. The icon for .doc files doesn't look exactly like the program icon. The same thing goes for Winamp and most other programs I have installed on my system.

Well, perhaps a Registry Search will help you. Look for >> \mjextman.exe,0 << in your Registry and replace the "0" with a "1". This should bring back the old icons.
 If the search doesn't give a result, perhaps do a search for >> \Media Jukebox.exe,0 << and replace it with >> \mjextman.exe,0 <<.

Good luck!

I tried rebuilding the icon cache but it doesn't do the trick.

I'll give the registry hack a go.

Thanks for the advice guys

No need for reg hacks....

Go to Control Panel > Folder Options.

Then "filetypes" tab.

scroll the list to find any media center associated file and select it (single click)

Click on the "advanced" button.

In the new dialogue, click on "Change Icon"

By default, it will show the icons in mjextman.
Pick the one you want and OK your way back to the desktop.
Job done :)

Note that this changes the icon for all files associated with Media Center (Files of type "media center file")

It's by design.

As rocketsauce mentioned, program and file icons are often different.

That's exactly what I've been doing but the icons keep reverting back to the less attractive ones.

So the default icon for MC files in explorer is the same as my first screenshot?

What icon does everyone else have showing in explorer for MC files?

If it is by design then why on first install of MC did my explorer icons look like the second screenshot but then they changed to look like the first screenshot?

Don't you guys think that the icons on the 2nd screenshot are more attractive.

When about 80% of your files are MC files it makes a big difference to the way Windows Explorer looks

This isn't going to turn into one of those three page long debates with everyone arguing over something as trivial as which icon is slightly prettier than the other and should therefore be the default icon for MC files...is it? :) ? ;D

But, since you asked...I prefer that the program icon and the file icon are different from each other.

I don't see it like that.  When I installed MC the icons on my 2nd screenshot were used in explorer.  At some point the icons changed to the ones in the 1st screenshot and I can't change the icon back to how it was when it was installed and get the change to stick.

There are hundreds of posts on this forum about the 'cosmetics' of MC and this thread is just as valid.

I'd be grateful if someone could just tell me which MC icon is displayed in their Windows Explorer. I'm afraid I'm still confused :-[

I see the document-backed MC icon (your first screenshot).

This follows standard Windows conventions. You will notice if you save a Word document or whatever, the 'W' icon is put in front of a document, to signify that this file is a document which is opened by the application Word.
Similarly, the MC icon is put in front of the document to signify that the file is a document opened by MC, and not the MC executable itself.

Sure, it's a taste thing, but the defaults follow standards. I assume that when the installer does it's thing, it re-associates the files, which Windows then picks up and creates the document icon for itself, not the installer.

Scott.

Thanks for the reply scott_r.  OK I can live with that.  My mind is at rest - there isn't anything odd about my system [on this front, at least :-[]
