Media Server Crashes Client
« on: November 20, 2003, 11:07:56 am »

I have a small home network with one pc storing all my files and running the Media Server from MC and another laptop with MC on it running as the client.

When I start the client MC it connects to the server but then after about 10secs the program closes automatically. It doesn't matter what I try I can't get it to not crash the client.

There are no restrictions on the network and all other lan activity works ok.  I haven't yet purchased MC so it is running as the demo on both computers cause I wanted to test it first obviously.

Any clues on what to look for.

Below are the details I was able to capture from the client before it crashed.

Are you running the same version on the client and server?

Does the client succeed in downloading the library before the crash?

Can you browse the library?

Is it crashing after 10 seconds of playing a song?

Thanks,

Same version on both machines.

When I first run the client it pops up a box 'attempting to find server' then the main program screen displays with the ip of the server under the Media Center title. Then within about 3-5secs the client crashes and closes.  I can't even get time to do anything at all.

Here is the log from the server

11/21/03 00:33:32 - sharer starting
11/21/03 00:33:32 - Initializing server.
11/21/03 00:33:32 - Server initialized
11/21/03 00:33:32 - sharer ready to accept connections
11/21/03 00:33:32 - Started auto response thread on port 5556.
11/21/03 00:34:10 - received a connection
11/21/03 00:34:10 - Current Connections: 1
11/21/03 00:34:10 - ready for another connection
11/21/03 00:34:10 - sharing thread started
11/21/03 00:34:10 - request for library
11/21/03 00:34:10 - sharing thread exiting

Start Media Center on the server machine, and load the same library the server is sharing. Does it crash?

Shut down the server. Start Media Center on the client. It should revert to the default libaray. Then start the server, and click on "Search for Media Servers". Does it crash?

The server works perfect no problems with library. If I start the Media Server on the Client computer I can use it on the server no problems all is good.

If I stop the Media Server  on the server computer and then start MC on the client it says searching for media server then failed to find server then displays the main program window but still crashes. But only the first time.  If I restart MC again it works ok.  If I then start the Media Server and then search for the server on the client it works perfect no problems until I close the client and restart it crashes again so I stop the Media server restart the client and it crashes once more after it fails to find Media Server then if restart again it's OK.

SO I think there is something wrong with my Client computer installation or a conflict with another software.  I will do some more investigations into what it may be now I have a bit more idea on the problem.

well I did a clean install of my system and installed MC first and it all works perfect.  I have started to install my other software and check MC still works after each one and so far things are OK but I haven't completely finished setting up the system yet.

If I ever manage to find out what caused the problem I'll post it.
