I'am going MPC-Any tips?
« on: November 27, 2003, 04:24:14 pm »

After many testing , i'am going MPC Insane for my cds and ripped LPS and tapes.

Insane because a transcoding to Lame fast extreme gives very good results-- this is for my cdmp3 player.

In "Avanced' there is a Command line to serve.
Right now there is --insane in it.

Any better setting to enter ?

Any know problem concerning tags ,art sleeve?
The KingSparta plug-in are working with MPC?

Zev,

I use "--xtreme --xlevel"

You can use the --xlevel together with --insane setting, I think it reduces clipping a bit. Well I think. Maybe some other mpc addict will comment on that, Xstatic ?

It's true that transcoding from mpc to mp3 gives very good results.

As for tags / cover arts, no problems in MC as mpc uses APE V2.0 tags. it's even more consistent that mp3 tags. For King's plugin I don't know if it works but my guess is if it interfaces with MC library it should.

good mpc encodings zev,

Yes, It Should it really lets MC9 do all the work with tags thru the SDK, so if MC9 allows it then it happens if not it don't

Don't need that anymore zev. Even standard is quite good. May want to test that for yourself however.

Media Center's mpc encoder plugin seems to be made from old stable version 1.1. At least plugin page says so. Or am I mistaken? Therefore I use external encoder version 1.14 as it is recommended (=well tested) in Hydrogenaudio.

My settings are:

--quality 6 --xlevel
(Previously "--xtreme", ~200 kbit/s, typical 168 ... 212)

MIKE.

I know ,and you are right.

I want the higgest settings only because of transcoding.
The higger quality the MPC , the best the transcoding.
To the point that i cannot 'see' any difference  CD to Lame fast extreme  or MPC hight to the same format.

I cannot go lossless- I have to much music.
And ,here , like in many countrys , hard drives are not cheap.
3 days ago ,i got a Western Digital 250 giga for ...$350.

MPC looks like the midway option to me- If not for this transcoding side, extreme will do.

Today , i had few friends at home .
And we did a lot of blind test with all formats.

One friend found exatly the words concerning MPC.

He said that any other format ,you think that there is a kind of DSP effect when you play it.
When playing MPC ,it sounds as the sound of the original- It is neutral ,transparent [?].

I have a question :
Concerning transcoding : do you think Braindead will give much better results than insane ?

If you never did it ,let say that Insane to MP3 Lame Fast Extreme sound to me as cd direct to MP3 on a dicsman with good headphones.
But ,Braindead still will give much better result?

What do you think the best setting in 'Advanced' [ in MC ] ?
At this time ,i have the --insane command line
And the decoder set to Insane.

Anyway ,i had some BIG surprises during all this tests.

First how the new WMA 9 codex are good.

Second ,how Xing 192 VRB sounds like a Lame 192 VRB.

I know....i know , but ,really i was not able to see any difference

Where do I find this plugin?

Can't see it on the encoder plugins web page.

It's the MPEGplus Encoder - 2.0.10.

You can also get the HA recommended mpc encoder (which is a little more recent than the one the MC plugin is based on) and use it with the recommended settings with MCs External Encoder plugin.
