Inputs to sound recorder do not work
« on: December 04, 2002, 06:38:07 pm »

OK, lets try this again....

I attempted to do some recording of one of  the internet radio stations in the web media radio stations listed in MJ.  I discovered that the only input that functions is the microphone.  That is to say no line in and no CD and no mixer.   All inputs except for microphone are silent

I have a Soundblaster PCI 128 using the W2000 generic drivers.  I chose to use the generic driver because when I first got W2000 the Creative SB drivers available for W2000 were full of bugs, and were messing my system up.  I have never had any problems using generic drivers but I know they sometimes lack all of the features of the OEM furnished drivers.   What kind of drivers are you guys in development using?   Any ideas as to why I can't select the proper source would be appreciated.  I intend in using MJ sound recorder to put all my vinyl into my computer.  But right now that would be impossible without the use of AUX input.

Does anyone out there have any success using a PCI128 soundblaster on Windows 2000  with respect to using the mixer or line inputs to the sound recorder feature iin MJ.  I would also like to find out what driver version you are using for your SB PCI128.

Any help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED
Thanks in advance

'soda

Did you check your mixer settings? Right click on speaker in the system tray of taskbar and select Open Volume Controls. Check slider settings and whether applicable input is muted.

Yes!  Tried all of the common user stuff all inputs are active and set to mid volume and no Mute check boxes are checked.   Only the Microphone works.  I have no other software tha takes advantage of recording besides MJ and MS sound recorder which no longer has any provision for line in or CD, just microphone.  In W98 you can record from CD with MS sound recorder but MS has removed that feature on W2000.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks for the reply

Remember that when you're setting the windows mixer controls for recording, you have to go to the Options/Properties menu item and then check the "Recording" radio button, then click OK to see the recording sources and adjust volume, mute, etc. Otherwise you're just adjusting playback volume and mute.
See the line-in recording tips under the Help menu at the top of this web page.

Yes, this is indeed a non-obvious problem. Like the previous poster said, you have to make sure that the Stereo Mix channel is set up properly. AND MAKE SURE THE SELECT CHECK BOX IS CHECKED!

To start from scratch, open the Volume Control application. Choose the Options. . .Properties command. Then check the Recording radio button. Also make sure the Stereo Mixer checkbox is checked. Click OK. On the Stereo Mix channel, there should be a Select check box. Check this and you should be off to the races.

Many thanks for the reply.  I think we are getting to the heart of the matter.  I followed your suggestions and there is no "stereo mix channel"  this is probably the heart of the matter.  I am beginning to think the problem is with the compatibly of my sound card.  I have an older soundblaster PCI 128 model 4700.  I went to the Creative site and looked around and found that my card is only supported on W95 W98 and NT4.  And it mentions that some features will not be available on NT4.  W2000 is NT based so it stands to reason that maybe my card dosen't function properly under W2000.  I sent them an e-mail support request asking if this is why I have limited functionality and to recomend the correct card for my system.  If I get a response from them with a definitive answer I will post the results of my investigation here.

Thanks to everyone for helping me to ferret out the answer to this problem.

Just an update.  So far no answer from Creative Labs on the support request I made 3 days ago.

Soooooo...
I thought I might try taking a stab at asking if anyone out there is using a soundblaster PCI128 model ct4700 and running W2000.   If you have this configuration would you please do me a favor and try recording something with MJ using your soundblaster's line input.

You might also try recording an internet radio station from the list in MJ and try to record it using the "Mixer" setting in the MJ recorder options list.  I can not get this to function either.

I need to know if this problem is peculiar to my computer or if it is something that dosen't work on all computers using a PCI128 and running W2000.

Thanks in advance for your help

I have a SB Live 5.1 card. It may be similar enough. I'll try tomorrow night and see what happens.
