Format Conversion removes original from library
« on: December 21, 2003, 11:20:05 am »

Hi, I am trying to rip my CDs to a lossless format for storage and playback on my computer. I also want to be able to play them on my iPod. I am currently using APE. I need to convert the APE files to MP3 for my iPod. I tried to use Licrary Tools -> Conver Format. It worked, but always removes the APE files from my library. If I unckeck the "Update library" option, it does not add the MP3 files to my library. I also tried to convert the files on upload to my iPod. The files do convert, but Media Center converts them for each instance. This takes way too much time, as I have many overlapping playlists. I can find no way to efficiently keep the APE files in mylibrary and have MP3 files to play on my iPod.

If you have enough disk space available to store both the APE and MP3 files you could do what I do.

I do the initial rip to APE and get the tags all nice and tidy.  Then I use Library Tools -> Convert format to create the MP3's.  When you get here click on Options.  In the Converter options tab you need to check the box labelled 'Enable' and then in the 'Location' box type the path to were you want to store your MP3 files.  You can also check the box to create the Artist/Album sub-directories if this is how you want the files stored.

If you have the box 'Update Database' checked you should get, after the conversion, two entries for each track, one for the APE file and one for the MP3.  If you leave this unchecked the original APE item will remain but the MP3 item will not be shown in the library.  You could import these into a seperate library if you want to keep them entirely separate.

Also ensure that the box 'Send original files to the recycle bin' is unchecked otherwise the APE files will be deleted.

Having converted the files to MP3 you can then use View Schemes to only show either APE to play on your hi-fi or MP3 to transfer to your iPod.

If you do not have the disk space to store both types the MP3 could be saved to CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW if you have the burners.

I hope this helps and am sure that those kindly souls here that know much more than I will correct me if I am wrong!
