Broken files in Library
« on: January 03, 2004, 02:48:19 pm »

About half of the audio files in my library appear broken in MC10.  Instead of a musical note icon, they have a file icon with an "X" in the bottom corner and they do not play.

I have tried doing an update library, but nothing changes.  Any ideas?

BTW - what do the different colored musical notes mean?

Thx

When you Update the Library, make sure you check "Remove files which do not exist' otherwise it will not get rid of those red markers.
This will NOT remove any files from your drive, only the erroneous entries in the library.

Of course, depending on whether ones keeps ones tags up to date, one should be sure that the entries are actually erroneous and not just misplaced. That is - check the filename tag and see if the file is just misplaced or doesn't exist anymore.  (For speed reasons I don't update the tags in my files very often... so if I clean the database of 'erroneous' entries, I could be deleting important information accidently [unless the files really don't exist anymore])

Zarius this is true, you could be deleting 'allegedly erroneous' files from your library using "Update - Remove files which do not exist' BUT,
They will NOT be lost and will be re-imported next time you do an import of those folders.

I do update my tags when I make changes, so 9 times out of 10 I lose little or no tagging info from re-import.

It is true that if your tags have not been updated to match the library, you could be facing alot of work re-doing them.
But that is a risk I'd rather not take considering that the unexpected is most likely to occur when you are least prepared. . . . . 'Murphy's Law' I believe   :D

Lisa - I did have "remove files that don't exist" checked and still nothing changed.  I tried again with "include network drives" checked, and the supposedly bad files were gone (along with all of the networked files that were not accesable at the time).  I reimported my music folder and the 'bad' files returned.

The weird thing is that the 'bad' files were local files in my music folder that were perfectly fine.

Weird.

you must have used another tagger and renamed the file

or moved them with another program

Are they still showing up the same or are they back to normal now that they were reimported?  This should have corrected any tag discrepancies you had between the files and MC's library db, so they SHOULD appear with normal audio icons.

That is possible.  I did try Musicbranz tagger.  But I am certain that I had "remove files that don't exist" the first time I updated the library.

Everything seems ok now.  Thanks for everyone's help
