Moving Files and Rating Field
« on: January 26, 2004, 04:21:16 pm »

A couple quetions. As far as I can tell, Media Jukebox has no function to rename media files and move that at the same time based on the ID3 information.  For example, say I have a directory with new music that I not only want to add to my library but I want to move it into my main music directory and put the file in a folder with the Artists name and rename the file to <artist name> - <title>.mp3.  I couldn't find a way to do this so I downloaded a 3rd party application that would.  Is there a way to do this in Media Jukebox or with a plug-in?

This leads me to my next question.  I tried several 3rd party media managers in looking for one that would to the rename/move function.  What I noticed is that these utilities (such as Windows Media player and Media Monkey to name a few) seem to be using the same field for 'Rating' but it appears Media Jukebox uses a different field for rating.  I don't like that the Media Jukebox doesn't appear to be using the de-facto standard rating field.  Should I decide to switch to another media manager, how the heck am I going to import the ratings for all 1,500 of my songs!

You don't say what version of MJ you're using, but I'm assuming it is 8.

Tools/Library Tools/Rename Files From Properties allows you to configure both directory and filename options, which would let you move/rename files based on their tag info.

Yes, I'm using version 8.  Thanks, I knew it was there somewhere.

I to add to my second issue, I have not been able to confirm if these other media managers are indeed using an ID3 tag field for rating and if so, if it is the same.

I guess I should have asked first if Media Jukebox stored the rating in the file and if so, in which field?  I'm getting the impression all these media managers store the rating in a local database and not in the file.  Can anyone confirm what's going on with the rating field at least in MJ8?

MJ does store the rating field in the tag info. I don't know whether MJs method of storing the info is compatible with any other programs. Also, I don't know if there is an ID3 spec that states how the rating info should be saved or if there is even an ID3 spec that deals with ratings at all.

I'm trying to figure out why 70% of my song ratings dissapeared. When you change the rating does it update the ID3 tag immediately or do you have to Update the library and tell it to re-write all the ID3 tags?

I think it depends on how you have the MP3 input plugin configured (Tools/Plugin Manager/Input). Also, some the settings in Tools/Options/General/Import & Tagging might affect that too.

My setting is "Save (if necessary)" for v1 and v2.

MJ8 also saved ratings dif than MC9 & MC10 does

if you load the mp3 (if it was a mp3) in a text editor they should be at the front of the file.

if it was another format not all formats use ID3 Tags or support extended tags.

what type of file was it?
