The biggest issue using MC with NetRemote
« on: February 13, 2004, 01:14:26 pm »

Dear Media Center developer team!

Your product is great and unique BUT there is one bug which makes its use very difficult for the entire NetRemote community using MC and NR in conjunction: I am talking about the issue when you call an album with mixed artists via NetRemote.  :'(
As written in several posts already, there is a bug in MC which causes any album with mixed artists to be sorted by artist NOT by track number. Many soundtracks, samplers, musicals etc. are therefore impossible to call up by NetRemote and played through MC.
I guess it is fair to say that the NetRemote community including its developer Ben have been very disappointed that no action was taken to correct this mistake. I guess everybody would be happy to upgrade to MC10, so no need to fix it in version 9, but please please get this one fixed! :-*

I have attached an older thread on this issue which I believe to be very critical for many users.

Thanks for letting us know how we can be of help and when you are planning to get this one straightened out. The day this happens, I will make an even bigger review of MC on my webpage...  ;)(www.audio-jukebox.com)

Thanks!

Here's the older thread which describes the problem:

Wicked Ewok’s question:

Hi Matt and Nikolay,

It looks to me (and I might be crazy) that IMJFilesAutomation->Sort() is still broken, in that it will always sort by Artist, and not by any sort settings that the user has specified.

Is there some other function I can use? I'd really like to present the user with the same tree that they see in MediaCenter.

Thanks!

Matt’s answer:

It's impossible to know what setting to use, so we use a default artist, album, track #, name.

Ideally we need a new sort function that takes a parameter.  You could always build the sort into your searches for now.

Thanks guys.

Wicked Ewok’ answer:

Thanks for the reply, Matt.

Couldn't you use the sort that is defined for that view? Or some global sort defined? Or at least take out the default artist and put album artist (auto) instead?

This is a problem for any CD with multiple artists, as the sort is always wrong.

Thanks Matt! I look forward to a fix/workaround for this issue.

Ditto. Everything is working perfectly in my house (has been for a year now), and MC is as stable as can be. Not one crash not related to experiments for as long as I can remember. But that issue is slightly annoying.

Wow!  That's the best HTPC web site I've ever come across.  Packed with useful sensible advice.  A great job!

This is only bug that causes me problems.

Other then this one issue I'm very happy with Media Center and Netremote.

Thanks in advance

Obviously I'd like this to be fixed. It does cause quite a problem, and is the only bug in MC that concerns NetRemote usage, I believe.

Matt,

Ben was suggesting this solution earlier:

Default sort by

AlbumArtist,Album,Track
instead of
Artist,Album,Track

Surely it is an easy bug for you guys to fix. It would be great to see it happen!

Thanks! :D

Yeah, thanks!  ;D I may even have to upgrade to 10 on my setup (which I have registrered a couple of months ago under the special offer), perhaps it's stable enough now to let it run my systems. It seems like most of the bugs I'm reading about is CD burning, iPod stuff, weird file formats and visual stuff, which does not matter at all as long as I only need it to play MP3 music without crashing.

You'll be safe enough Mastiff.

Thanks! I'll take your word for it. Of course your butt won't be there to take the punishment instead of mine if my wife manages to crash MC10... She's like the Bermuda Triangle of computers - if there's a one in a trillion chance to do something that brings down a system, she'll manage to do it quite by accident. Which is why all my systems are 100 % reliable before I let her loose on them...   ;D ;)

With your system she must surely be used to it by now.  The WAF on v10 is no lower than any other version.

Good luck.

Actually I don't think anything noteworthy has happened since last winter, maybe the fall before. The only thing I can remember is that she managed to pull the USB plug for the USB-UIRT under the stairs (and that's why the cable now runs in the wall, with the plugs taped together...) , so the wakeup call didn't come in time. But of course I do have a backup system, so that kicked in.  ;)

Thanks for this.  It sorts out the same problem in MusicLobby as well.
