Let's try this again...
« on: February 18, 2004, 10:18:31 pm »

What... Is this a sensitive topic or something...?  I asked this yesterday and no replies.  What gives?

Here it is again...

I'm wondering something about video file capability of Media Center.  I'm sure that the answer is posted elsewhere, but I don't seem to be able to find it, so I thought I'd ask here...)

1.) What formats of video files can MediaCenter play now?

2.) What formats can it NOT play?

3.) Are there file format conversion capabilities for video formats similar to what it has for audio files (MP3 to OGG, OGG to Lame, WAV to MP3, etc.)

Thanks...   :-\

i dont know if its comprehensive but go to tools > options > then look at the list of supported file formats (scroll down and pick out the vid files).

as far as non supported files. there are some (eg. divX) where you need to get an external plugin. but thats all i know.

as for the final question - no idea.

not much help, but im trying to help you get your thread rolling.

Maybe if you worded you question differently..

It sounds like you are asking about every video format ever invented.  How about you explain what you are trying to achieve.  If you want to know about a specific video format tell us which one.

Are you trying to rip DVDs?  Transfer your home collection to MC etc?

I don't have the program.  Therefore I can't go to "Tools".

The question seems reasonable, since I can give you a list of the types of  audio files that can and can't be played on MJ.

This seems like "Yes" or "No" to me:

Can MC convert one kind of video file (like AVI) to another (like MPEG)?

What types of files CAN it play?  It seems to me that that would be available in some promo information somewhere.

Should I list here all of the file types I'm wondering about?

Thanks... I think... ?

No, it's not a sensitive subject, but it does take a bit of work to compile the information. We're not trying to avoid you... we're just lazy. ;)

But here's what I can gather from perusing the File Associations list... (some of these may not be video, but most are.

MPEG Video (mp2,mpeg,mpg,m1v,mpv,mpe,m2v)
Windows Media Video (wmv,wvx)
Windows Media (asx,asf,wm)
QuickTime (mov,qt,mp4)
AVI Video (avi)
RealVideo (rv)
RealMedia (rm,rp,rmm,rmx,smi,smil,rmj)
ShockWave (swf)
DIVX Video (divx)

Here's the complete list of file types it supports:

AAC Audio (m4a,m4p,m4b,aac)
WAV Audio (wav)
AU Audio (au,snd)
AIF Audio (aif,aifc,aiff)
MPEG Audio (mp3,mpa,mpga)
MIDI Audio (mid,midi,rim,rmid)
MPEG Video (mp2,mpeg,mpg,m1v,mpv,mpe,m2v)
JPEG Image (jpg,jpe,jpeg)
GIF Image (gif)
BMP Image (bmp)
Windows Media Audio (wma,wax)
Windows Media Video (wmv,wvx)
Windows Media (asx,asf,wm)
QuickTime (mov,qt,mp4)
MusicEx Media (jmx)
AVI Video (avi)
Audible Audio (aa)
RealAudio (ram,ra)
RealVideo (rv)
RealMedia (rm,rp,rmm,rmx,smi,smil,rmj)
ShockWave (swf)
OGG Audio (ogg)
MPC Audio (mpc,mp+)
Monkey's Audio (ape,apl)
CD Audio (cda)
Media Playlist (mpl)
Audio Playlist (m3u,pls,xpl,bpl)
DIVX Video (divx)
Shorten Audio (shn)
TIFF Image (tif, tiff)
PNG Image (png)
Audio Playlist (m3u,pls,xpl,bpl)

Interestingly enough, MC claims to support 80 filetypes, but the list I could come up with from the File Associations options box only shows 73. Where are the other 7? Some third party plugin that I don't have installed?

As for your other questions...

2) Any format that I didn't list above.
3) No.

Cool... thanks.

Is file conversion a possibility... something for the future... or not?
