I have noticed a problem (maybe specific to MC 9.1.313 & Soundblaster Live) with crossfading on different sampled MP3's.  I have around 100 or so 48Khz sampled MP3's encoded @ 192kbps.  When building some playlists recently I noticed there was no audio crossfade between these files and my other 'normal' 44Khz sampled MP3's (either playing as part of a playlist in playing now or if you press 'play' whilst another MP3 is playing).

My question is this - is this normal?  Is MC 'sipposed' to be able to crossfade between different sampled audio or is this a bug?  Is this a hardware or driver limitation?  Took me a while to figure this one out as there didn't seem to be a pattern initially.

It's not possible to crossfade different sample rates without resampling one of the two streams.

So what you're seeing is normal.

If it's a big deal, you can use MC's DSP Studio to lock the output sample rate at 48 khz (or whatever else) and then it'll resample everything to that rate so fades will always work.

One more question - are there any ill effects caused by forcing 48Khz playback in MC?  (any loss of quality etc?)

The reason why I ask is I have around 150 (now counted em) 48Khz files - but would mean having to rip the videos again with a rate conversion WAV output (which is pretty slow) and then encoding in MC.  Pretty long winded.....  My other 10,000 or so files are all 44.1Khz.

Laffer, would you mind sharing how you found 'em.  I was trying to do something similar but there is no field or keyword in MC for sample rate.

My guess is DVD's, where the AC3 tracks are typically 48 kHz. BeSweet (among others) can downsample to 44.1 kHz.

Yep Xen is right - specifically these (the 48khz) were ripped from DVD (I have the video but always keep a copy of the song, as not always do I want to play the vid for the song).  So essentially just matched up the songs to the videos.

If you need a tool to tell you what the sample rate is try (dare I say it) winamp or a nice little proggie called gspot (mainly for sussing video formats but also does audio).
