O.T DVD player won't play MP3 files
« on: February 24, 2004, 12:58:03 pm »

I have a cheap dvd player that was given to me. It is supposed play mp3 files. Couldn't get it to work. The files came up, I used the remote to try to play either a folder or an individual file but no dice. Stuck in a CDA disk and it played fine. DVD disks play fine. What am I missing. Do I have to connect the digital out for MP3 files.

Is it playing and your net getting sound, Or just not playing at all?

It appears to be not playing at all. Sound is fine with a cda cd or a dvd

Some cheap DVD players have a very limited MP3 decoder - ie. it may not handle high bitrate or variable bit rate MP3s.

Another possibility is that it may not handle long file names, though if you can see the files this is probably not the problem.

I used to have a site bookmarked, but I can't find it now, that listed what DVD players would play what type of files, and on what type of media.  Try a google search, nevermind here it is...

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers.php

browse around and see if yours really will play mp3s, might need a firmware upgrade.

good luck.

The most likely reason, as gpvillamil pointed out, is that your DVD player can't handle certain (higher) bitrates or variable bit rates.

I used to have an el-cheapo DVD player which said "Plays MP3s!" on the box, but it wouldn't play VBR files at all, and bitrates over 192 would cause some not veru nice squealing noises to come from the speakers; very nasty for the ears.

Well I got it to play my mp3's. Problem is I don't know how I did it. The instruction book that came with it is worthless. It has a very nice looking remote but no instructions. I just kept hitting different buttons on the remote and suddenly it strarted playing. And very well on a disk with 250 files.

I have a cheap one too. There doesn't seem to be any kind of autoplay setting for MP3 disks. When mine reads the disk (which can take quite a long time) it displays a two paned directory structure up top and a play mode selector on the bottom.
On my remote arrow selectors seem to control movement through the panes. Right and left act kind of like tab and shift-tab and up an down arrow cycle through available items in that pane.
Select key or enter or play key will choose the song to start playing. And there's the rub! I haven't found any mode that just let's you play automatically. You must actually navigate to an actual track and select it to begin playing.
I don't know if any of this helps you with your setup.
